About this deal

I really love this book, it's got loads of adventure in it. Alfie is trying to be a normal 11 year old except he's 1000 years old and can remember all the kings, queens and the last Viking invasion in England . Alfie Monk is like any other nearly teenage boy – except he’s 1,000 years old and can remember the last Viking invasion of England. The book takes you on a wonderful journey, from self discovery to friendship and loyalty, it has everything in the right dose. Even though the main characters are middle schoolers, I connected with them easily. Author Luke Palmer introduces his new book, Play (Firefly Press) about four boys growing up together, the challenges, the friendships, and what hap... This novel has everything you want from a children’s book – pace, plot, great characters who grow and learn from their experiences, and suspense. It has a happy ending. Although I believe that children should not be completely shielded from some of the tragic realities of life (Alfie’s mother is killed and for a time he believes his cat was also), I also think it’s important for the 9-12 age group that there is positive resolution and that good things can come out of bad. That way, I believe, we can help build children’s resilience, a role that books have always had in my life for sure.

This is the best book I have ever read! My favourite character is Roxy because of her great acting skills and ability to think fast. There is an old comedy sketch for radio by Mel Brooks called “The 2,000 Year Old Man,” which I had heard of but never listened to. Perhaps that was what triggered the thought?i absolutely loved this book. it was so well written and the characters were developed nicely. no scene felt like a filler and everything had a purpose. the three main characters (alfie, aidan and roxy) were an absolute pleasure to read about. i don't think there's a single thing that i disliked about the characters. although, i must admit, the cat is my absolute fav and i'm so glad it's okay. i had some worries when i first started reading the book. The climatic end was everything I wanted. It was easy to forget its a children's novel - but 100% worth the read for any adult. Great for fans of Charlie & Me, The Ethan I Could Have Been and Fishboy. And, if you haven't read Ross Welford's other books, they are well worth it too. Well, not if you are Alfie Monk. He is a 1000-year-old boy. And all he wants is to grow old and die. There are stories about people who want to live forever. This is not one of those stories. This is a story about someone who wants to stop... Alfie Monk is like any other nearly teenage boy - except he's 1,000 years old and can remember the last Viking invasion of England. Obviously no one believes him. So when everything Alfie knows and loves is destroyed in a fire, and the modern world comes crashing in, Alfie embarks on a mission to find friendship, acceptance, and a different way to live... which means finding a way to make sure he will eventually die.

Alfie and his mother live a quiet and discreet life in a secluded cottage in the woods. By moving around every few years they have managed to avoid discovery and the authorities. Alfie’s existence is awkward though; if he makes a friend they soon become suspicious of the fact that he does not grow up like them, and it is the betrayal of one former friend in particular which leads to a fire at the cottage which destroys Alfie’s home and kills his mother. Alfie finds himself in the care of the local authority and is unable to reveal anything about himself, fearing the consequences. Fortunately, Alfie makes two good friends, Aiden and Roxy, both of whom live on the estate close to Alfie’s cottage. He reveals his secret to them and they set out to help him. Some books leave you, with a warm fuzzy feeling and a smile on your face. This is one of those books. An incredible book for 10 years and above. From around 8 years children can develop a sudden fear of death. It’s probably due to the fact that, at this age, they begin to realize that life is tangible. I would highly recommend this book for teachers to read to a class and discuss it as they go through it. From the friendship perspective (9 year is the age of first friendship ‘break ups’), death, adventure, adjusting to changes in family circumstances etc this book has it all..Thank you Ross for yet another thoughtful, compelling, moving read - that made me both laugh and cry - especially the moment in the story when the cinema in my head started playing Queen, Who Wants To Live Forever. A truly original read, the plot’s twists and turns are anchored by the warmth, courage and humour of its varied characters. Told from the alternate perspectives of Alfie and his new friend Aidan, brought together by the strong and funny Roxy Minto, it thoughtfully explores issues such as grief, bullying, isolation and responsibility. For any story to connect to the reader, the protagonist has to connect to the reader. Alfie Monk is a fascinating character. He is not someone you would adore or sympathize with immediately as you might perhaps have done with August Pullman in Wonder. He is complex and you get to see so many layers in him as the story moves along. Eventually, you sympathize with him. Feel for him as he is struggles to cope with the modern world. And root for him to achieve his goal. A heartstopping, poignant, epic adventure story about a boy destined to live forever, who only wants to grow up. At one point, tragedy strikes Alfie’s life and he is left completely alone in the world. He is frustrated at his condition and wants to grow old. But for that he needs help.

The book is gripping, filled with twist and turns to keep you hooked. One of those books I will definitely reread. Alfie is 1000 years old. He has seen Viking invasions, watched Shakespeare’s plays and experienced the horror of the Second World War. When a tragic fire occurs, Alfie must find a new way of living. With his new friends, Aidan and Roxy, he sets out on an epic, dangerous adventure to find a way to reverse the effect of the magical life-pearls, which have kept him 11 years old for 1000 years. These resources are made for Year 6 pupils and will show evidence for a number of reading skills at different abilities. They will help to assess the understanding of the text, characterisation and attitudes along with promoting deep discussion on inference and impression of characters using evidence. This unit also promotes a stamina of reading. I really liked this book it took me a long time to start liking the plot but by the end it was great.

Whole Class Reading resources and planning for Year 6 in a zip file based on the first six chapters of Ross Welford’s book ‘The 1,000 Year Old Boy’. Aidan and the unflappable (and delightful) Roxy are saddened to find that reclusive neighbour and fellow 'eleven-year-old' Alfie Monk has been made homeless after a tragedy at home, but still manage not to tell the authorities that Alfie is over 1,000 years old. This is the story of Alfie's quest for mortality! The plot is exciting, thrilling and adventurous as we follow the kids on their shared quest of making Alfie mortal again. It’s a game of keeping secrets from the adults and it works very well. The kids are well-written and the chapters shift between action and information in a good pace. The ending was a typical, high-adrenaline and a little over-the-top action ending. There were life-threatening situations, evil adults and police and rescuers etc. In general, a very dangerous mission for our three little friends. Read it if

The 1,000-year-old Boy - book written by Ross Welford

Another part I loved about was the character of Roxy. She is a wonderfully crafted character – a gutsy, smart, free-spirited and courageous girl who brings out the best of those around her. She is a staunch friend and has no negative bone in her body. While the book does revolve around Alfie, Roxy certainly steals the show in several scenes. It all made the book the hardest one I have written; it is also, however – in my opinion – the best. I am very proud of the finished story, and I cannot wait to share it with readers.Stephen has been keeping a secret of unbearable proportions. He can't confide in his foster family, his social worker or his dead-beat father - they wouldn't believe him anyway. At the point when Alfie is left all alone, I couldn’t help but wonder – what it would have been like if I was given this gift? Sure, I would be thrilled at first. But, say after a 100 years, when I will find that I have no family and friends left and am just living on, how would that feel? As Alfie says: “without death, life is just existence”.
