About this deal

DISCLOSURE: Thank you to Random House UK, Transworld Publishers, Bantam Press via Netgalley for providing a digital ARC of The Apartment Upstairs by Lesley Kara for review. The writing style is very good and the dual storyline works extremely well, leaving you guessing right to the very end, and, in my case, guessing wrong and being surprised by the twisted ending.

Dee is working hard running her funeral home business with her best friend Lindsay despite the sinister bad reviews they are receiving on their Facebook page. So she’s got enough on her plate without worrying about the threatening messages that are appearing on her company’s Facebook page. The story also includes a strand featuring that of a missing woman, a best friend of the two women who run the funeral business, Fond Farewells, engaged by Scarlett to deal with her aunt’s funeral. You get to know the characters as each one’s story unfolds and just when you reach a relaxed reading pace the tables are turned and more details are revealed that leave you suspecting that everyone is not who they initially appeared to be. Her latest is not only an intriguing mystery of a murder/suicide and a decade old disappearance, it is also an intense character study with two unusual females at the helm.As always this is purely my opinion and I am sure that this will appeal to some but sadly this was not for me. Great writing, with characters that will make you live right from the beginning and a twisted story overall. You will not regret it because each and every one is unique and enthralling and The Apartment Upstairs is no different. Not only has she moved back into her flat beneath where her Aunt Rebecca was murdered by her partner who then committed suicide, but she is having to organise the funeral and manage the debilitating condition, ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis). For Dee that was horrifying and she thinks she should've confided in someone about it because that was a sign that he's dangerous.

Gina’s disappearance has left her distraught and while she keeps up appearances, she has put her life on hold. The idea itself wasn't bad, but it was written like a cozy murder mystery and I wasn't expecting that. The two women start to uncover secrets that have long been buried but someone wants to stop them digging.

People do much worse and kill and there are occasions where the author creates a real sense of pervading evil. Not only do we get a murder mystery, we also get a great insight into a life living with disability and the intricacies of dealing with the bereaved.
