Note: Although the cabling can be located outdoors, the EdgeRouter itself should be housed inside a protective enclosure. The EdgeRouter X has evolved a lot during the past few years and Ubiquiti is slowly adding new features and building it to become a lot more than it was at the release date (using the excellent routing software). So, overall, this is a well-built device, it has a plethora of features, it’s extremely flexible thanks to the EdgeOS software (it offers so much more than the usual consumer-type router) and, considering its incredibly low price, it’s very hard to find a better alternative device on the market.

Through the web interface, Network --> Firewall, "Software flow offloading, which will then allow you to enable "Hardware flow offloading". All other setting are unchanged/defaults. The QoS tab opens a new window with three sub-tabs: Smart Queue (it provides FQ-CODEL + HTB functions and it supports dynamic interfaces), Basic Queue (configure simple Queue policies) and Advanced Queue (adds more features and flexibility to the simple Queue policies). Finally, all configuration nodes available for CLI can also be accessed through the “Config tree” tab of the web interface, offering a somewhat hybrid approach by allowing users to browse through the entire configuration. EdgeOS Configuration Tree I’ve also noticed that my streaming is much improved since switching to the USG. I’d get some lag while live streaming content using IPTV services before, but not anymore. To be honest, that is a good question. Personally I always use the EdgeRouter, but more about that later. So I tried to come up with scenarios when you should buy the USG, and to be honest, they are pretty hard to find. I have disconnected all connections on the Switch / EdgeRouter and have disabled all non-relevant vlan’s on the EdgeRouter. So, overall, the EdgeRouter X has been improved with every new software update and, while it’s not the next best thing since sliced bread, it does a lot of things right, while offering a lot more for its money than the large majority of routers from the market.

If you were comfortable in configuring EdgeRouters via the CLI or config files, then you could easily run “vyOS” instead either as a VM or on physical hardware. It would take a bit of a learning curve since there is NO webGUI in vyOS currently. But it is much more robust and currently up to date compared to the long “dead” Vyatta project. I hope this little comparison helpt you choose between the Unifi USG and the EdgeRouter. This whole process started when I was trying to upgrade from OpenWRT(VM) to something bare metal. The rest of my house is all Ubiquiti Unifi gear, but Ubiquiti's current Unifi Routers (USG) dont fit my needs/cost use case. After much googling and frustration I stumbled across the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X (ERX). I was VERY pleased to find a nice peace of hardware with solid specs (2 core, 4 threads, 256/256 Storage/RAM), NO wireless, PoE (24V), 5X 1Gbps ports,and an all metal case. Was even more happy that I could just power the ERX right off my core switch. Something that every manufacturer of networking devices should take seriously is the heat management and Ubiquiti devices are somewhat notorious for running a bit hotter than normal (especially the access points line). Fortunately, the small ER-X remained cool even after I put some stress onto it and I suspect that the vent holes on both sides give a helping hand into maintaining a proper airflow. Pro Tip: Ports 0~3, with my tweak, all act as "LAN" ports. Use any of them, like you would a normal switch. Only the physical port labeled "eth0" can support 24V PoE in.
