DI Jimmy Perez and his team investigate the murder of a teenage girl whose body was found on a secluded beach. Under suspicion is Magnus Bain, a local recluse, who had forged an unlikely friendship with the victim and whose home overlooks the crime scene. But then the public prosecutor draws attention to an unsolved case from 19 years ago of a girl who disappeared which has strong similarities to the new case. Series six will feature six hour-long episodes, and David Kane is one of the lead script writers on the series, as he has been for the show’s previous outings When a young man disappears on a ferry crossing and a small boy ends up in intensive care after overdosing on Ecstasy, Pérez and the team become convinced the two events are connected.

Donna returned home to Shetland on compassionate grounds, after she was diagnosed with cancer while in prison. The broadcast of Episode 6 was delayed due to coverage of an FA Cup replay being broadcast. In contrast to Season 2 (three 2-part episodes), Season 3 is one 6-part story.
