In this region, people made mattresses out of leaf-covered boughs and cheese from ewe’s milk formed into little rounds. They ground chestnuts for flour, dressed in patchwork clothes, whittled new wooden soles to enable shoes to last longer, brewed infusions out of moss to cure an assortment of ailments, and slept beneath sheepskins that still smelt of sheep. Though they had little enough themselves, they were hospitable. One day Newby was given a picnic by a barrel-chested man in a snuff-coloured velveteen suit: nothing, he found, could be more delicious than the ‘ polenta, a sort of solidified yellow porridge made from maize, which he sliced with a piece of wire; wonderful hard white bread made from something called pasta dura and with it slices of culatello, a kind of unsmoked ham from part of the pig’s behind that was cut so thinly that it was almost transparent’. The reader is with him now, feeling his excitement at getting fed after months of want.Access-restricted-item true Addeddate 2012-12-07 19:37:16 Bookplateleaf 0008 Boxid IA1306311 City London Donor In 1942, Eric Newby ( A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush, Slowly Down the Ganges) was captured in a botched attempt to raid a Sicilian airfield from the sea. He spent much of the Second World War in prison camps, first in Italy and later in Czechoslovakia. But in the autumn of 1943, he enjoyed a few months of freedom when he escaped to the high villages of the Apennines. There he found hearty and generous Italian farmers who were willing to risk everything to give him refuge. I wish I could give this classic more than 5 stars. I’ve just read it for the second time since I bought it in 1976. All these years later, it makes sense, now that I live in a similar area in the Tuscan Apennines that he describes so beautifully. This has been a long-winded way of saying, Newby has impressed me. Set in Italy during the War, his capture, and subsequent escape, Newby has written a compelling novel. His voice is perfectly balanced. In fact, I got the impression that he rarely used the word 'I', though he probably did. A large portion of the novel is spent describing Italy in a travel-writing fashion, and the characters he meets. The moments where Newby does talk, I like him. I think he would have been great to have a cup of tea with: witty, sensitive, the old style English gentleman. The writing was brilliant and his journey, though real, was fantastic to read. Maya Jama slips into a skintight jumpsuit as X-Men's Storm as she joins Paloma Faith and vampy Jourdan Dunn at the Love Island host's Halloween bashSurviving in the unforgiving mountainous terrain during the onset of winter was no easy matter, and Newby does not romanticise either himself or his predicament. This is no Boy’s Own tale of derring-do, but the story of a young man of 22, often frightened, questioning his own motives and strength of character and feeling intense guilt at times at the lengths to which his various hosts go to save him. Newby’s self-deprecating humour lifts the tone, which would otherwise be overly morose in places. a b Mawer,Simon (22 January 2010). "Avanti!AuthorFindsItalyBetween'LoveAndWar' ". Hailed as Newby's 'masterpiece', Love and War in the Apennines is the gripping real-life story of Newby's imprisonment and escape from an Italian prison camp during World War II. The German army were active nearby, searching for the escaped POWs, and the Fascists had soon regrouped and were threatening death to those who were aiding the allies.
