About this deal

Bottled at 90 proof, Russell’s Reserve Rye features notes of almond and allspice. Its crisp, lively taste works in a smooth, complex palate. The high-proof rye is made with a mashbill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley. It is aged for a minimum of six years in new American oak barrels before being bottled at its natural color. A lot of drinkers unfairly assume that all rye is spicy or hard to enjoy unless you’re a “true enthusiast”. Russell’s does a great job of demonstrating how flavorful and easy to enjoy rye whiskey can be. Despite it making up a tiny portion of their overall distilling Knob Creek says it aligned the whiskey’s return with the cast iron skillet because bourbon gets better with time in barrel, just as a cast iron skillet improves with use. Each time a skillet is used, a layer of seasoning is added, thus increasing the quality of performance. The company made headlines in 2013 when it announced that it was going to reduce the ABV (Alcohol by Volume) content of its bourbon. The plan was to move from 45% to 42%, which would allow the company to increase its inventory by nearly 6%. Of course, this didn’t sit well with Maker’s Mark loyalists.

Knob Creek 12 Year Bourbon

Knob Creek 12 Year Bourbon: The same strength and formula as the original, this whiskey was a 2020 release. It is aged for 12 years, which adds to its oaky flavor.

Maker’s Mark has a deep rust-color with a leaning toward orange, whereas Knob Creek has a deep caramel color, like burnt orange.Murphy, Morgan; Editors of Southern Living magazine (2014). Most major distilleries have a small batch product, such as the popular Four Roses Small Batch or Elijah Craig Small Batch. While Knob Creek delivers its own unique flavor profile compared to others, it’s also not one that stands out head and shoulders above the competition - or at least as much as it used to. I’ve been an on-and-off friend of Knob Creek, and a mostly fair weather friend to Beam products in general. I’ve always liked Knob Creek’s age-stated 9 year-old although judging by what I wrote seven years ago in that link, the quality has dropped a bit (or I’ve gotten jaded, which is possible). I really liked Old Tub from Beam, which is still the deal of the century if you can find some. Still, most Beam bourbons give me a distinct off-note that’s somewhere in between engine grease and bitter vegetation, like chewing on grass.

The Knob Creek Straight Bourbon Whiskey has a sweet smell, with plenty of stone fruits. You’ll notice a hint of peaches and cherries, as well as a bit of vanilla if you let allow it to sit for a moment or two.Regardless of whether the Service offers the functionality to contribute, you are solely responsible and liable for any content and information that you create, upload, post, publish, link to, duplicate, transmit, record, display or otherwise make available on the Service or to other Members, such as chat messages, text messages, videos, audio, audio recordings, music, pictures, photographs, text and any other information or materials, whether publicly posted or privately transmitted (“Contributions”). Knob Creek fans appreciate the quality of intentional workmanship, and we’re excited to release our extra-aged Knob Creek 18 Year Old for a limited time,” Beam seventh-generation Master Distiller Fred Noe said in a news release. “The partnership between Knob Creek and Smithey Ironware came from the passion that both brands have for the details, whether it’s with cooking or in a fine glass of bourbon.” Another factor that can affect a whiskey’s “smoothness” is its age. A younger whiskey is often more likely to be harsher and more astringent than an older whiskey. This is because the longer a whiskey ages, the more time it has to filter through char in the barrel and develop complex flavor notes. So, if you’re looking for a smooth and easy-drinking whiskey, you should look for one with a low ABV and/or an aged flavor profile. I’ll repeat, though. This isn’t great bourbon. It’s serviceable bourbon, and it’s cheap, and it came in a freaking giant bottle that lasted me for a great deal of the past year. It made many Old Fashioneds, and I saluted its empty bottle like the grave of a comrade-in-arms. We went through a lot, together, me and my bottle of Knob Creek. Here’s to you, friend.
