About this deal

A standard kitchen knife will work fine. I avoid serrated edges because smooth blades tend to cut easier for me. Stirring utensil such as a spoon Hurrah! I have now made 4 batches of soap and am well on my way to being dangerously addicted ;) Christmas presents are sorted for this year haha! I’m just struggling to get my head around a couple of things. Firstly, I bought a silicone mould with 12 individual bars instead of a loaf, and am struggling to get it to gel. Either that or I’m just not recognising gel when I see it. I’m wrapping it up with 3 or 4 towels and heating the oils & lye to 45C. Ought that to be hot enough for individual moulds? Once you have made some melt and pour soap bars that you love, you might just get the bug. If that happens, and you want to make more, you can save a small fortune by purchasing your MP soap in bulk straight from the manufacturers.

Nothing too special is needed here. Just keep in mind the melt and pour soap base melts at about 140 F degrees. This means metal spoons left in for long enough will get hot and any plastic stirrers will need to be heat resistant to at least 180 F degrees, which is about how hot the soap will get if you melt it in short bursts. Whisk Although you don’t need full overalls, at the very least you will need safety glasses, protective gloves and an apron. These will protect your skin, eyes and clothing from any unwanted caustic splashes. Kitchen paper towels, cloths and hot water There are different ways to make soap, from super simple to extremely complex. We will focus on the best method for beginners to create custom bars of deep cleaning luxury. I’m talking about highly customized melt and pour soap. Below you’ll find the cold process soap making procedure and ingredients you need to get started, along with the basic homemade soap recipe that I’ve used to make soap from scratch dozens of times.

But if you feel up to it (which I have a feeling you are), I would suggest substituting 100g of the shortening for Shea Butter, then the rest can be substituted for more coconut oil (so 280g more). Be sure to run it through the lye calculator again before deciding how much lye and water you’ll need. If you don’t feel ready to use shea butter yet, just substitute it all for coconut. Maybe you can use Shea in your next batch!

Hi Cindy, it sounds like something must have gone wrong here. You say that you used shea butter, so this does change the recipe quite a bit and alters the required lye and water. I’m wondering how much shea butter was used and if you ran it through the the soap recipe calculator. Reply Once you add the Lye to water it creates a small chemical reaction, some choking fumes will rise from your bowl. This is the area that concerns most people, but all you need to do is keep your face away from these fumes while you stir the lye solution and try to not breathe them in. You could use a mask here if you want. I wrap a scarf around my nose and mouth and that’s probably sufficient, as the fumes only last a few moments. It is absolutely essential that you wear protective gloves when handling lye. Household rubber gloves will suffice, but if you prefer something thinner and yet still as protective, nitrile gloves can be worn. Nitrile gloves are more resistant to chemical splashes than rubber gloves. Lye is very caustic and can cause burns on the skin. Therefore, it’s important to wipe down all tools, counters and equipment used with vinegar. I always have a spray bottle of vinegar and water, since that’s what I use to clean my house. Shop this post Authentic, natural soap, both hard bar and liquid soap, is made from the chemical reaction of lye combined with fats. The lye is made from water (or water combined with other liquids) and an alkali. For hard bars of soap the alkali is sodium hydroxide, for liquid soaps the alkali is potassium hydroxide. Safety advice for handling lye With your protective gear on, i.e. rubber household gloves and safety glasses or goggles, gently sprinkle the measured lye INTO the water. NOT the other way around. *** When starting out making handmade soap, you may feel that you need to use your own recipes. The issue with that is that beginners are generally unaware of why certain oils are chosen for soap recipes, and in what ratio. That’s why I believe that beginners should always use tried and tested recipes at first. Including the three further on below.
