About this deal

Five Crowns is a rummy-style card game where the objective is to have the lowest point total after all eleven hands have been completed. In this way, the game is similar to another rummy-style card game: Phase 10. It is most similar, though, to Three Thirteen.

This may seem really obvious, but a lot of people subconsciously “write off” the card they’re using the wild for.

Game Play

The Joker is always a wild card. In addition, there are rotating wild cards that change every round. Wild cards rotate based on the number of cards dealt that round: A lot of good players will use the same cards to go for multiple books at a time and open up the odds of getting a card that works for them. Each hand after the initial hand functions the same way, except one extra card (compared to the prior hand) is dealt.

If you have only one wild card or Joker in your hand after someone goes out and you can’t play it, you may wish to discard it. This will cut your losses (wild cards and Jokers are worth lots of points), but unfortunately it will probably help your opponents. We play cards with several different groups of friends and family. With some, I never pull stuff like this, but with others, I know we’re competitive enough that a strat like this is just a part of the game. You can only use the number of cards you were dealt to make your books and/or runs. You must have one card left to discard. Your discard can be a playable card. Runs: A run consists of a sequence of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit. For example: To be the player with the lowest score at the end of the 11th round by making your entire hand into books and/or runs. I’m not going to list out the directions here; instead, I will direct you to SET’s official solitaire rules.

As an incentive to “keep score,” I suggest counting all the points against you in your discard pile. It’ll be a lot, but you can compete against yourself or others to see who can get the lowest discard score. So, when 3 cards are dealt, the 3s are wild, when 4 cards are dealt, the 4s are wild and so on until the last round when the Kings go wild. When the card for the round is dealt, the remaining cards should be placed in the middle, and these will then form the draw pile. Before starting the round, take one card off the pile and put it down, so it’s face-up; this card creates the discard pile. Book and RunsSo if you’re sitting on two 5s, you’ll be waiting for one of those remaining two to make a match or book as they call it in this game. Each one is worth its value, the round wild is 20 points, and the Aces are 50 points, so make sure to lay them down as soon as possible. Wild Card: Wild cards can substitute for any card in a book or run. The card value serving as the wild card for a particular round changes. Game Setup
