About this deal
All mushrooms are fungi, but not all fungi are mushrooms. Put simply mushrooms are the fruit of certain fungi. In natural history, fungi are a whole kingdom on its own just like plants and animals.

This mushroom illustration is from the 1889 German illustrated encyclopedia “ Meyers Konversationslexikon“ I have always been fascinated by the natural world; a love instilled in me at a young age, and documenting what I discover has become my main motivation for creating my work,” Kato reveals in an artist statement. “As a child I spent a lot of time collecting bits and pieces in tins or boxes which I would take with me on walks through parks or countryside. This has had a huge influence on my work along with my love of botanical illustrations, the natural sciences and the nostalgia of museum visits where, as a child, I would be mesmerized by the variety of exhibits and the way they were displayed. I tend to view my work as a 3D record of my knowledge and experiences of the natural world.” The beautiful colour plate paintings of each mushroom found inside will appeal to botanical art fans and mushroom lovers alike and the curated selection of images reveals the different painting styles between European and Japanese biological drawings of the period.
The book has several sections. Each is divided by the source of the images, and so by subject matter as well. Illuminated Copper-engraving from Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium, Plate VI. 1705 by Maria Sibylla Merian. (Photo: Wikimedia Commons)

stars. Beautiful book! A great addition for the coffee table and anyone who is remotely interested in fungi! The German text at the top of the chart simply translates as “ mushrooms the description of the species itself under the preceding names”. Each piece is scaled up to around 30cm, but still features true-to-form shapes and colors based around the different 28,000 known species of orchid. Hart says, “I endeavor to recreate these incredible flowers as faithfully and authentically as possible, whilst imbuing them with my own artistic interpretation.” This is the second collection of fungi and mushroom illustrations available. The other collection focused on mushroom charts and identification posters rather than individual mushroom drawings.I really appreciate the multi-cultural aspect, it’s so interesting to see different art styles between countries. It's a fascinating book of history with beautiful illustrations. I would not recommend it as a field guide, but as an interesting book full of fungi, it's wonderful. This would make a nice selection for public library acquisition, for gardeners, gardening groups, smallholders, and lovers of botanical art. Filled with intricate details, and often rendered in delicate hues of greens and blues, this book would be a great buy for anyone into mycology but also a more casual fan of fungi or those that Scientifically there is no difference between toadstools and mushrooms. However, generally, when people refer to toadstools they are talking about toxic, poisonous, or inedible fungi. Whilst mushrooms are used to describe tasty and edible fungi.

This is a mushroom drawing of probably the most iconic of toadstool species. Also known as the fly agaric this red mushroom is probably one of the most recognizable mushrooms in popular culture especially in Scandinavian fairy tales.

I have always loved botanical art but mostly flowers and foliage. Only recently did I start being fascinated with fungi. Two of the books I have enjoyed the most this year had fungi at its core (Sorrowland by Rivers Solomon and Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia). I officially became a fan of Kingdom Fungi when I saw Fantastic Fungi on Netflix. There’s something so amazing about the level of detail in these artworks, and you can really tell the amount of time, love and effort went into the making of these from their respective artists. Please be aware that the delivery time frame may vary according to the area of delivery - the approximate delivery time is usually between 1-2 business days. This is a collection of very old public domain artwork of mushrooms. Some collections are in full color but many are not. Some are definitely more artistic and it is not terribly complete. There are some much nicer collections in the public domain out there IMHO, but some of these are lovely and it's certainly going to be a hit with any mushroom lovers.
