The few instances of compression artifacts and banding present on the Blu-Ray are eliminated with this 4K UHD disc. Given not just the change in scenery but in protagonists too – we’re following somewhat estranged sisters Beth (Lily Sullivan) and Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) as they reunite in Ellie’s soon-to-be-condemned apartment in the middle of a rainy, dark, downtown night. Audio stings actively wash over the entire soundstage, front to back, side to side, in a breathtakingly seamless way and overall, if you have a fully pimped Atmos set up, this is one of those discs that will absolutely make the very most out of it in terms of surround usage. The bass is booming with amazing rumbles and the height speakers rain down weather, voices, and other pieces of debris and haunting effects amazingly. Darker sequences are bathed in a blueish-green filter that has a moldy texture that keeps the tone within its aesthetic.And for those that are looking out for Bruce Campbell - that wish will be granted in a pitch-perfect way that might cause this film to be in a multi-verse of sorts. From the studio logos and the buzzing of flies around the speakers, the track almost punishes us with one of the most aggressive sounding surround experiences I’ve had in the home. Fans of Raimi’s Evil Dead films no doubt know the excitement of watching the hero as he battles the forces of evil – with a chainsaw for a hand.

The change in setting brings a new dynamic but may also alienate some hardcore fans of the original films.With a new take and perspective on the subject matter, Evil Dead Rise succeeds in its grim, horror, and bloody take on the material while paying homage to the previous films all while feeling fresh and original.

But those sequences that come with fire or interior lighting have a wonderful amber glow that looks nostalgic and decayed. Make-up and VFX are put to brilliant use as some very grievous bodily harm is dished out with an almost maniacal euphoria and its tone falls somewhere between the Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Home Alone, the pitch-black humour coming from the outrageous situations Cronin places his victims…sorry, characters in. Other new releases on Blu-ray include Tales of the Walking Dead: The Complete First Season from RLJE Films, The Tank from Well Go USA and Big George Foreman .Faces covered in blood, green skin and ugly teeth – if this is something that gets you going, then you’ll be right at home. The excellent cold open shatters expectations throughout the surround speakers with an incredible low-end of bass. Aside from the name, there’s very little (to me, at least) that has anything in common with the original Evil Dead movies. There is nearly always something going on in the surrounds, but there is never an issue with hearing what everyone is saying. Its not just about those shadows though, with Cronin puncturing the darkness with bright point sources such as torches or the odd strip light and these really do pierce the image.
