When you sip the rum or add just a little lemonade it gives you a very vibrant and very fruity drink. It’s not overly smooth or overly simplistic. It has a bit of a bite and it has a lot of nice well defined and bright fruity flavours. The notes on the nose transfer over and are added to by a little more fruit and a touch of coconut. It’s quite zesty lemon and lime but I’m also getting tangerines and some white grapes.

Many white rums are barrel-aged for several years and then filtered through charcoal to remove the inherited colour (and other impurities). Il Ritual Pampero prevede di consumare il rum accompagnato con una fetta di lime cosparso di polvere di caffè e zucchero di canna. Aromas of vanilla, cooked banana and hints of caramel and butterscotch. The palate is buttery with toffee brittle, peanut butter and spice. The soft oak finish is complimented with lingering spice. White rums just tend to get talked about all that much. There doesn’t seem to be a white rum that everyone really agrees on. Plantation 3 stars is the most lauded but I have to say I’m not that sold on that one. People just don’t seem al l that excited about white rum. Pampero Rum was first crafted in 1938 by the son of a fisherman, Alejandro Hernandez. The original recipe introduced a distillation process unique to Venezuela. The sugar cane is harvested in the humid dry season, to produce a smoother cut of alcohol. The alcohol is then blended with the local Carbonero spring water which helps give this spirit its smooth, rounded flavour. In 1953, Pampero became the first Venezuelan rum to receive the “Norvean Seal”– the seal of approval from the government as a guarantee of excellence, awarded only to products of the highest quality. Pampero's main markets are Italy, Spain and Venezuela. Its main production plant is located at "Complejo Licorero del Centro", in Ocumare, Miranda state, in the region of the Tuy river valleys, in the central plains.

Ron Pampero" is typically known by Venezuelans as "Caballito Frenao" (literally "Restrained Horse" but in this context "Rearing Horse"), in reference to its popular brand logo, a cowboy sitting astride a rearing horse in the Venezuelan plains, a scene comparable to that of the gaucho from the Argentinian plains, or Pampas, so therefore its name ( "Pampero" literally means "from the Pampas", although the Venezuelan plains are called Llanos). The nose you will also find familiar if you have dabbled in any of the lower end Venezeulan rums or just Pampero in general. There is a sweet “butteriness” to this rum a little like a sponge cake or a fairy cake batter. I’m also getting a kind of bitter charcoal or a chalky character on the nose. Light fruity notes and a subtle touch of citrus fruits and a little white grape. In this instance the makeover is more of an update really. Giving the rums a more modern feel. For Pampero Blanco the company have opted to move the rum from a tall bar style bottle into a shorter, rounder stubbier bottle.
