About this deal

If you are confident in your skills to carry out the work yourself, you must keep the following in mind: Damp proofing– If you are removing the breast of a chimney from the ground floor, there is a risk of damaging the damp proofing.

When you hire a contractor to remove your chimney, always get at least three estimates so that you can ensure you’re getting a fair price. It should be raised from the normal floor finish to identify it, and project at least 50mm from the stove sides and 300mm from the front of the stove when a stove is positioned within a fireplace recess Your stove manufacturer will also advise on the flue diameter, type and other requirements needed. It is best practice to install a minimum size of 150mm if you can to ensure it’s safe to use, regardless of the type of fuel to be used. Ventilation– to comply with part F2, they will need to be adequate ventilation in the room of at least 8000 mm². Protect your property – a chimney removal creates a lot of dust and debris. Try to minimise the amount of dust and debris by sealing off the area in which you are working. You can use plastic sheeting or tarpaulin and tape to hold it in place.

Make sure the chimney breast is removed from the floor up through the ceiling to at least 1 metre in the room above. If you do feel it could do with a wash, you just remove the plastic parts and washing on a wool cycle, but don’t tumble dry it. The size of the chimney breast will affect the cost. This is because the smaller the breast, shorter the time it takes for the contractors to remove them. Similarly, a larger chimney breast will cover a larger area making it time consuming. This will increase the labour costs and in turn the overall cost to remove the chimney. Property location In the early 1900s, in the western part of Ireland, crofters made a simple water boiler using hand tools. They were normally made of copper and took many hours to make.

They sequester carbon, mitigate flood damage and create habitat for wildlife. I started the company when I was looking for land because I was growing trees in pots and need somewhere to plant them. While working as a volunteer, Sally received countless calls from people who had a bat flying around the house; all the doors and windows were closed, so the only way the bat could have got in was down the chimney. FDamperA pivoted sliding metal flap that regulates the amount of draught, preventing excessive variations. It can also close off the fireplace from the outside of the house, preventing air loss When I asked around I got conflicting information, some would say you needed hard wood, others a mixture, and others soft wood, and I realised they were all correct, it was dependent on how their unit was set, often the sides of the fire box should be moved in for hard wood and out for soft wood so it gets the burn rate required to ensure no particular emissions. Often referred to as letter box flue, modern houses generally later than 1960s often have a pre-cast concrete flue system in the UK. Logic suggests that a taller chimney produces more draft because of the simple fact that there tends to be more of this hotter, lighter gas in it, which creates more updraft. However, the increased draft inherent to a taller chimney tends to be offset by the greater friction found in the chimney and by the tendency of the gases to lose their heat as they rise.

NB: The diagram below dissects a masonry chimney with one flue. A chimney may in fact contain more than one flue, and its type is dictated by the heat-producing appliance required. To open up an old chimney, the flue must be cleaned and inspected by a professional chimney sweep, and possibly relined to meet regulations. Alongside the money saved on customer bills, the simple draught excluder has also made a huge difference to the environment. FLUE CONNECTOR:Connects the fireplace to the flue. Bends shouldn’t exceed 45°, to enable them to be swept clean. If you don’t give the fire sufficient oxygen, it will find its own, pulling great gulps of air down the chimney and belching smoke out into the room. If necessary, add a vent to an outside wall adjacent to your stove or fireplace. Renovating Existing Chimneys A closed combustion gas fireplace that works by taking air for combustion from outside the property through the outer flue tube, mixing this with the ignited gas at the burner and exiting the fire through the inner flue tube to the outside of the property. If you are building a new chimney, take note at what works for the surrounding properties. They will already have been built or adapted for the local environment. Pre-fabricated flues are therefore not suitable for solid fuel appliances; DGF taper tray or basket type gas fires and most fully inset gas fires.
