About this deal

Demand your own personal space. If you need to be alone, don't let people bother you. Cats will let you know by hissing or growling if they're tired of attention. Playing with your hands can encourage biting and scratching, which may seem cute when they’re a kitten, but remember that they soon grow up and the bites and scratches will get harder. To Be a Cat by Matt Haig – review | Children and teenagers

I liked that this book was written from a cat's point of view, with an interesting plot and storyline. Get professional help from BetterHelp’s network of 30,000 licensed therapists. Take Assessment Secondary characters like best friend Rissa and head teacher Miss Whipmire gave the story so much depth. These characters were completely in a league of their own and they were a fantastic contrast to Barney, who I was rooting for from the very beginning. I loved, loved, loved how evil Miss Whipmire was and her reasons behind being this way. Although I knew there was a twist in the book, I wasn't quite ready for it to be this but it was certainly genius from Haig. Characters in To Be a Cat often have names to suit their personalities: the Primm twins are neatly dressed and every teacher's favourites; Gavin Needle – the school bully and a key player in this tale – needles Barney mercilessly; Mrs Lavender is the nicest teacher in school. Another key character is the "author" himself. (If not actually Matt Haig, that's how he signs himself at the end.) He's not a participant in events but his voice is a real presence throughout. You won’t quite have the charm and good looks of a kitten all your life, but you’ll look damn good – no wrinkles, no nothing – up until the day you die…But what about our feline family members? At what age are cats fully grown? How do you know when to start feeding them adult cat food?

Your only job around the house, unlike the subservient “dog,” is looking pretty/being cute. For that you get free food and board for life. Losing a beloved cat can often feel overwhelming. You may feel waves of intense emotions like sadness, frustration, and guilt, or simply feel numb and lonely. While people who haven’t enjoyed the love and companionship of a pet may not understand how you’re feeling, it’s important not to feel pressured to move on. Rather, allow the grieving process to happen naturally. Lower stress and anxiety. Cat owners know how one session of petting or playing with their cat can turn a bad day into a good one. Scientific evidence also shows that a cat’s purr can calm your nervous system and lower your blood pressure. This is a fun book, but certainly not silly, and things really do get a little hairy once in a while: there's a whiff of real danger. And when Barney does become a cat, something very unexpected happens and, no, I'm not going to tell you what. It transpires that there are three types of cat: the two-legs (who used to be human); the firesides (happy, domestic cats); and the swipers (tough street cats). They don't all see eye to eye, of course. Then there's the mysterious Terror cat to contend with. Ultimately, though, To Be a Cat is a book about being comfortable in your own skin rather than someone else's fur. A safe environment. Cats are small, delicate animals that do well living mostly indoors. Although many cats love to roam free outside, other predatory animals and traffic, for example, can threaten their safety. Always monitor your cat’s whereabouts and keep an ID tag on its collar. Having your pet microchipped will allow shelters and veterinarians to easily identify you as the owner should your cat get lost. The book starts on Barney's birthday. He has to go to school, despite his birthday. On this particular day, the fire alarm goes off and Barney is blamed for it by the principal. The principal threatens to expel him. After having such a rough day, Barney spots a cat and wishes that he could live a carefree life as a cat. Then the next morning Barney shrinks, grows fur, and becomes a cat. (Yep...) Two of my favourite characters, though, are the wonderfully rude head teacher, Miss Whipmire, who obviously hates children, and Barney's dog, Guster. Miss Whipmire has a cat-skull pencil pot on the desk in her study. Guster doesn't recognise Barney in cat form. ("Confine your tongue. Do you know who you're talking to? I am a King Charles Spaniel … ") Both make Barney's cat life difficult, in very different ways.

Then again, if you’re a cat, how are you reading this? It wasn't till I started listening that I realised it was a children's Y/A book but it was so good I finished the audiobook. Most kittens should be fed free-choice until they are around 6 months old because of their high energy requirements. I loved this, what a brilliant message, I'm a big fan of Haig anyway so I expected a decent book but I was expecting a story not a life lesson and this book just full of messages that people should live by, love yourself the way you are, it's okay that you aren't everyone's type of person, life is sad sometimes and that's okay too, it's okay to not be okay. Barney Willow does just that. Bullied at school by kids and his headmistress, not communicating well with his mum and missing his divorced dad, Barney sees a cat and wishes they could change lives. And this being that kind of book, is exactly what happens. Barney's about to discover just how wrong he is. Because he's about to wake up as a cat - and not just any cat. Gavin Needle's cat...
