About this deal

And so, Undaunted: Battle of Britain was born – or at least conceptualized! Osprey wanted it as a 2023 release, timed for either UK Games Expo (June) or GenCon (August). Trevor and I needed to complete the core gameplay concepts by June 2021, complete 80% of the design by December 2021, and hand over everything by March 2022. In Undaunted: Battle of Britain you lead RAF or Luftwaffe aircraft and battle over the skies of Britain in the most famous aerial battle in history. In the game you’ll experience dogfights and bombing runs, with British ships trying desperately to escape the Luftwaffe, antiaircraft guns aiding the RAF fighters, and much more. Roland MacDonald is a graphic designer, illustrator, and board game designer. With a BFA in Fine Arts and an MA in Game Design, he started working doing 3D modelling for PS2 and PC games. After doing concept art and illustrations for Shogun 2 Total War , he moved on to work primarily on board games, illustrating titles including Stop Thief!, Kaiju Crush, and Battle Line. You can’t crash into other planes and there are rules to cover what must happen if you would fly out of the map area but if you fly into a barrage balloon it’s curtains!

In Battle of Britain, players can partake in eleven different historical battles above the English Channel. The first thing to note is the end-game situation. Typically, the game is won by either the Royal Air Force (RAF) or Luftwaffe neutralizing a certain number of aircraft. There are other end game goals that require ships to escape the board, structures to be bombed, or a combination of these. Players compete until a goal is reached, or all their aircraft are neutralized. Undaunted: Battle of Britain is gorgeously illustrated by the amazing Roland MacDonald. I say this for each Undaunted game in the series, but I really do believe that Undaunted: Battle of Britain is the most beautiful game in the series. It would have been very easy to lose the personal touch that the previous Undaunted titles have had in the shift to an aerial combat game. But the decision to keep the cards focused on the crew, and Roland’s gorgeous art, really helped keep the game feeling personal.Undaunted: Battle of Britain is a very good game that has the misfortune of living in the shadow of its outstanding older siblings. What it does bring to the table, however, is novelty: for such a broadly similar game, this feels fresh and new, with the forced movement of aircraft forcing you to plan ahead as best you can. There are 26 of these tiles each consisting of five 2″ diameter hexes in a row of 3 and a row of 2 and labelled A-Z. They are double-sided with coastal scenes, countryside, harbours and airfields on one side and all sea on the other. There are also a further five, 3-hex in a line pieces to tidy up the edges. The two-sided printing of these tiles means they can be put together to pretty faithfully represent chunks of either the English or French coast and the English Channel. In addition there are another 20 full hex-sized markers that can be overlaid to denote further features. These are : 6 Clouds, 4 Barrage Balloons, 4 Anti-Aircraft artillery (AAA) batteries and 6 Ships. here are also 7 smaller markers to represent target structures.

Undaunted: Battle of Britain review: Aerial combat handles

Osprey Games is the dedicated games division of Osprey Publishing (part of Bloomsbury Publishing plc) and publishes a wide range of wargames, card games, and board games and roleplaying games.Undaunted: Battle of Britain is a standalone game in the Undaunted series, adapting the core gameplay of the previous games to recreate the dynamic dogfighting of aerial combat. Maintain cohesion between your pilots, evade anti-aircraft artillery, and leverage talented aces to win the battle for the skies! Along the same line, the aircraft illustration doesn’t do enough to distinguish between the two different sides of the war. The Luftwaffe have a darker token, but it does little to contrast with the RAF. As a comparison, it was very easy to know which units were yours in Stalingrad. Soviets were white, Germans were gray. Here, this is further muddled by units on each side sharing the same letter/number combinations. Did I just move your Y1 plane? Oh, I thought that was my Y1 plane. Now, where were we? Card illustration remains excellent though the card variety isn’t as unique as in other Undaunted sets. Final Thoughts: Gents, we’re ready to show you the core gameplay concept we’ve developed for Undaunted: Battle of Britain. The concept is that the players play elements of the RAF and Luftwaffe from Dunkirk through the Blitz. Each unit = 1 plane, so players are controlling about six aircraft each in a typical scenario. We’ve included a couple screenshots from the most recent test (RAF fighters trying to stop BF 110C’s bombing key targets, while they are defended by BF 109E/Fs).”
