About this deal

With the Acer Chromebook 314, however, it’s almost battling to give you too much Chromebook for your money, with an eight-core CPU, 4GB of RAM and a 14in Full HD touchscreen at a price where other manufacturers are offering dual-core CPUs and dim, HD-ready, non-touch displays. Surely it doesn’t add up? It also has no external display ports so there's no opportunity to hook this up to a monitor or screen for presentations, unless you use an adapter - again, sacrificing a USB port. A low-end CPU like an Intel Celeron or Pentium or AMD A-Series will serve if all you do is browse with a tab or two open. Chromebooks based on Intel Core or AMD Ryzen processors will allow for more able multitasking, though they'll also be more expensive. Note that AMD offers a handful of C-series Ryzen mobile processors designed specially for Chromebooks.

Other pluses include a well-spaced keyboard and a sharp Full HD screen. Brightness levels are pretty good by Chromebook standards, and there’s more colour depth than with many budget rivals. In fact, the only reasons not to invest in the Spin 514 are that faster models, with 12th generation Intel CPUs, have now arrived and that the battery life isn’t quite up there with the leading models. But, if you’re happy to live with a slightly dated spec, this is still one of the best value Chromebooks out there. The best Chromebooks you can buy in 2023 1. Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i Chromebook: The best affordable chromebook If you'll need to give presentations from your Chromebook, an HDMI monitor port is usually more convenient than carrying a USB-C DisplayPort adapter. Also look for a USB port or two if you'll want to attach a mouse, a flash drive, or another peripheral. Gaming Another slightly marginal aspect is the 14-inch 1080p screen. It’s IPS, so color accuracy and viewing angles are decent. But it’s a little short on punch, brightness and vibrancy. It’s not a terrible panel. But neither is it good enough to be a highlight or a feature you can enjoy in its own right.

The Acer Chromebook's panel emits up to 215 nits (a measure of brightness), which is near the HP Chromebook 14 (212 nits), but dimmer than the Dell Chromebook 13 (270 nits), Toshiba Chromebook 2 CB35 (378 nits) and the category average (251 nits). Don't expect wide viewing angles, as I saw color darken significantly at 45 degrees. And, most importantly, we also bring our many years of experience to bear in assessing the usability, ergonomics and build quality of each and every machine we review. This is now our favorite Chromebook for pretty much everybody; we recommended it to anyone who wants a reliable and powerful 2-in-1 ChromeOS laptop. Its standout features—like long battery life and best-in-class performance—make it an ideal choice if you prioritize performance and productivity. Overall, this model should be a first stop if you seek a versatile, high-performing, and durable 2-in-1 Chromebook beyond the budget bin. ARM-based Chromebooks are nothing new, but the Spin 513 is the first we’ve looked at to use Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 7c chipset. This sees the leading manufacturer of smartphone and tablet CPUs trying to break into the laptop market, and a combination of respectable speeds and a ten-hour battery life make the Chromebook Spin 513 a great choice for life on the go. This really is a Chromebook with a 14in 1080p screen, an eight-core CPU, 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage at a remarkably low price. It’s also slim, light and generally well designed.

The usual native display resolution on a Chromebook will be 1,920 by 1,080 pixels, otherwise known as full HD or 1080p, but cheaper Chromebooks may have lower resolution while deluxe models may have higher. For most midsize Chromebooks with screens from 13 to 15 inches, 1080p is just fine. Entry-level models' resolution of 1,366 by 768 pixels can look coarse and is only really suited for laptops with screens smaller than 12 inches diagonally. Try to avoid this resolution on any 13-inch or larger screen, or at least try to eyeball the display in person before you buy. Note that all Chromebook Plus models will have at least a 1080p screen. Processor In Geekbench 5’s multicore test, for example, it scored 1,380 versus 1,237 from the older Celeron N4500 Acer Chromebook 514, and 1,088 from the Celeron N4200 Acer Chromebook 317. However, that still makes it slower than the Acer Chromebook Spin 513 (Qualcomm Snapdragon 7C), let alone any Chromebooks we’ve tested recently with the faster Pentium Gold CPUs. Contrast is perfectly fine for a budget panel, so you can make out plenty of detail even on those murky Marvel shows. Colours are also quite punchy. Just don’t expect hyper realism. The Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 3 Chromebook is ideal if you're in the market for a 2-in-1 detachable Chromebook. Its compact design is excellent if you're on the go or prefer a smaller device while still having both laptop and tablet functions. The peppy performance and versatility of the Duet 3 Chromebook make it ideal for students, professionals, and anyone who needs a reliable and affordable device for basic computing tasks. The Acer Chromebook 14's 0.9-megapixel webcam shot pixelated photos of me in our office that appeared to have been set in a pointillist filter. While the camera did a good job of reproducing the red of the wall behind me, it captured little to no detail, with most of my hair registering as a brown swoosh. Acer is one of very few manufacturers to fully embrace the wonderful world of Chromebooks. These stripped-down, simplified laptops use Google’s Chrome OS instead of Windows, with more of an emphasis on online work and play. And in the case of Acer’s collection, they come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes to suit your own personal needs. Sitting somewhere in the middle of this range is the Acer Chromebook 14.
