Mepiform is a thin, discreet and flexible dressing covered with a soft silicone Safetac layer, designed to aid the body's healing of wounds and scars, old and new.
When applying Mepiform, make sure the area is dry. When used together with ointment or cream, ensure the dressing covers an area beyond the cream. A silicone gel sheet is a soft, flexible, self-adhesive dressing that is applied over scars. It contains silicone. Silicone can help to improve the colour, height and texture of a scar. Silicone can also relieve itching and discomfort caused by a scar. How does it work? Middelkoop et al found the use of Mepiform was associated with a significant improvement in hypertrophic scars in a study involving 12 patients. Safetac is a soft silicone adhesive technology. Mepiform dressings adhere gently to the skin and protect the scar tissue. The Safetac technology allows the dressing to be changed without causing pain. It can be lifted from the skin without losing its adhesive properties, allowing for reapplication if inspection is needed. Topical silicone has empirically been shown to have positive impact on hypertrophic scars and keloids. It may take from 3 months up to a year or more to improve an old scar, depending on the condition of the scar tissue. Mepiform shall optimally be worn 24 hours a day. It is recommended that Mepiform is removed once a day, e.g-when showering or bathing, for inspection and washing of the skin. For prophylactic treatment, Mepiform shall be used for 6 months depending on the condition of the scar.
Widened scars appear when surgical wounds are stretched as a result of skin tension during the healing process. They are generally pale in colour, flat, soft and symptomless, but can be aesthetically displeasing . Contracture scars are particularly severe and usually occur as a result of losses of large areas of skin, e.g. following burn injuries, in epidermolysis bullosa and in badly aligned surgical wounds not corresponding to Langer’s lines. These scars cause the edges of the skin to pull together, affecting the adjacent muscles and tendons, thereby restricting normal movement and resulting, in some cases, in the need for z-plasty or skin grafting. Mepiform can soften, fade and flatten your scar and improve the appearance of your skin. However, some evidence of the scar may remain.
Wash the gel sheet daily using lukewarm soapy water, rinse well and dry by patting it with a non-fluffy towel. In 2006, Meuleneire demonstrated how the early use of Mepiform prevented scarring of a severe forehead laceration in one patient . Should maceration or rash occur, remove the dressing and allow the skin to recover until the symptom has disappeared, then continue treatment gradually increasing therapy time. If the symptom persists, discontinue use and consult a physician for advice. It is not clear exactly how Silicone works on a scar. They are more likely to form where the primary cause of the scar persists, where there is continued inflammation and when the scar takes a long time to heal .
