As always, when I’m blogging at least, a carefully constructed puzzle which should entertain and in places stretch the less experienced solver and provide a diversion for those who’ve been doing the puzzle for decades and have moved on to more challenging cruciverbal contests.Down clues were `normal’, which helped a lot in providing checked lights to help in solving the trickier across clues.

I mush prefer the fermented bean curd, Chau, which tastes of blue cheese and the Vietnamese use as a dip. Yes, it’s certainly better than last week (which isn’t difficult), but not really up to Colin’s standard. While appealing to solvers of all levels of experience, the Everyman crossword is often suggested as a good starting point for those new to cryptics, and fledgling solvers will find the solutions notes and introduction to cryptic clue types to be invaluable. I agree about the recent standard: the clues have been frustratingly imprecise: poor definitions and/or indicators, and an over-use of solutions embedded in the clue, but above all they aren’t entertaining: ponderous and over-literal: none of the sparkling wit of the predecessor. After seeing your description of this puzzle, I went and did it and also went back to try some previous Everymans.

It should make finding your question easier for others and, the easier it is to find, the more likely someone is to answer it!
