About this deal

Use if for children's costumes and bodices and one of it's great characteristics is that it can be sewn through easily. to my knowledge there is NO evidence that steel was used as primary boning material in any stays or corsets up until mid-late 19th century.

Boning | Sew Essential

It is possible to use plastic whalebone for the same purpose and with the same effect but the integrity of the material over time is not so guaranteed and of course where steel could rust if not looked after, plastic can warp if not looked after. Woven boning like "rigelene" is not a good boning for corsets, but it is a remarkable product for creating 3 dimensional shapes like "cages" and it is stronger than many of the woven bones on the market. You could add them directly to the wrong side of the main layer of the bodice, although it’s better to create a separate layer underneath and insert the boning to that. As ever, I present no pre-conceived conclusions and encourage experimentation at every step of your sewing journeys which is why it's no secret that I do not agree with the statement "plastic boning is better than steel". It’ll be a fun piece for a night out, a costume, or a good starter for those freshly diving into corset-making. In that case you’d continue pattern piece number 3 all the way up and cut it on the fold, and the cups would start maybe 1cm or 3/8in.

In technical terms, corsets refer to a type of garment that is ‘worn to hold and train the torso into a desired shape. You’ll need some extra circumference measurements below the waistline to adjust the darts and side seams correctly. Our high-quality boning materials come in various sizes, shapes and materials to cater for your sewing needs. From the stays of the Regency era, to the hourglass waistline of the Victorian era, to even the boyish silhouette of the 1920s, the design of your corset depends heavily on the era it was worn. So although we all know that once plastic is made, it can never be 'unmade', the properties which made it useful when new, will degrade over a relatively short period of time. For dark coloured plastics, opt for a cyanoacrylate adhesive with a low odour and low bloom grade; Permabond 940. We are taking this opportunity to introduce a strapless 1750's back lacing option, and to try some fun new bone angles on the 1780's front lacing. While you can add straps to each of these four designs to prevent them from collapsing, another solution is to insert boning.

Synthetic Whalebone (German Boning) -6 sizes | Boning

These stays feature all of the same construction details of our current stays, but with 6mm synthetic whalebone in place of steel. Starting from the most simple method: sew the boning directly to the garment, centering it over the seam. This is for good reason: steel boning is durable, reliable, comes in varying thicknesses/flexibility and widths, and is treated for rust-resistance.

Boning is used because without it, the foundation would collapse and would not support the weight of either the petticoats or the over garment.

This boning is sometimes a little curly when it comes from the roll, you can safely iron or use a heat gun to flatten it. They’ve seen many renditions throughout the ages, as each generation improved upon the last version. When placed inside corsets (which are right beside warm skin), this material naturally follows the shape of the body, regardless of the wearer’s body type. If you want the casing to be folded towards the center front piece, trim the seam allowance of the center front piece.Whether you’re making a corset, a bridal gown, or simply need support in your garment, we’ve got you covered.
