About this deal

And meanwhile, my own Me was just simply lost and bemused. I didn't fit into their mold (ouch, very punny). This is Jeffrey Archer’s first book. And what a great book it is! I have read it during my teenage years and decided to re-read again. This book (and its author) were wholly unknown to me until I was handed the book to read once a friend had finished it. I had very few expectations or pre-conceived notions of what I was about to read...

The book lives up to this slogan. A simple and interesting read. It more or less reminds you of all the heist movies you watched. Jeffrey Archer was so chuffed that the BBC wanted to adapt his first novel that he sold the television rights for one penny. On May 13th, 1964, the Secretary of State for Power laid before Parliament "Statutory Instrument-- No. 708--Continental Shelf--Petroleum." Harvey read this particular document with great interest, thinking that it might well be a means of making an exceptional killing. He was particularly fascinated by Paragraph 4 of the document, which read: While it's obvious that the events at Ascot needed to be fictionalized to serve the story, it was also jolting that the "Race of the Century" received none of the detail given to an inconsequential first-round women's match at Wimbledon. Harvey / Rosalie's race certainly benefitted from the play-by-play; perhaps Harvey's preoccupation with his own horse precluded him from noticing any other aspects of the race, but it still felt odd that the historical aspects of the 1975 race were ignored. (It is difficult to believe that the race had not taken place while Archer was writing this section given his correct game-by-game detail of the Kathy May (Fritz) / King match) Change the plan you will roll onto at any time during your trial by visiting the “Settings & Account” section. What happens at the end of my trial?

Everybody is so stiff upper lip English even the American and French characters manage that peculiar English affectation. They christened her Rosalie, and she became the center of Harvey's attention; his only disappointment came when a prolapse closely followed by a hysterectomy prevented Arlene from bearing him any more children. He sent Rosalie to Bennetts, the most expensive girls' school in Washington, and from there she was accepted at Vassar to major in English. This even pleased old man Hunter, who had grown to tolerate Harvey and adore his granddaughter. On gaining her degree, Rosalie continued her education at the Sorbonne, after a fierce disagreement with her father concerning the type of friends she was keeping, particularly the ones with long hair who didn't want to go to Vietnam--not that Harvey had done much during the Second World War, except to cash in on every shortage. The final crunch came when Rosalie dared to suggest that morals were not to be decided only by length of hair or political views. Harvey missed her, but refused to admit the fact to Arlene. Harvey Matcalfe , the king of successful financial con's , has conned a million dollar with empty promises of oil bonanza and instant wealth. Overnight, four men - the heir to an earldom, a Harley Street doctor, a Bond Street art dealer and an Oxford don find themselves penniless. But this time Harvey conned the wrong people. They unite and device a plan of revenge.

Was Resistance, Rebellion and Death our motto? No. Leave that to our Union bosses - and they were rife in that place. Archer knows how to hold the attention of the reader with right amount of surprises at the right time and its very clear in this one.

It was said to have been inspired by Archer's real-life experience of near- bankruptcy.

He was unable to sleep that night and became steadily more restless in his small open-windowed but airless room. At 1 A.M. he could stand the uncertainty no longer, so he jumped out of bed, shaved, dressed and took a subway to Grand Central Station. From there he walked to Times Square where with trembling hands he bought the first edition of the Wall Street Journal For a moment he couldn't take in the news, although it was shrieking at him in banner headlines: Harvey Metcalfe, a Polish immigrant to the United States, rises from messenger boy to corporate magnate, combining business skills with little loyalty and much ruthlessness. Over 40 years, he has mastered the shady deal, and by the 1960s is a multi-millionaire. Harvey couldn't believe it. How easy it would be to use such a license to create the impression of a vast enterprise! For a few hundred dollars he could be alongside such names as Shell, B.P., Total, Gulf and Occidental. The story is so descriptive, informative, greatly entertaining and hilarious at times. It covers the whole spectrum of no integrity, but how strangers can become friend if fighting for the same cause. I particularly liked the scene during the wedding at the end of the book, it was highly intense and super hilarious.Making a million legally has always been difficult. Making a million illegally has always been a little easier. Keeping a million when you have made it is perhaps the most difficult of all.” MAKING A MILLION legally has always been difficult. Making a million illegally has always been a little easier. Keeping a million when you have made it is perhaps the most difficult of all. Henryk Metelski was one of those rare men who had managed all three. Even if the million he had made legally came after the million he had made illegally, Metelski was still a yard ahead of the others, he had managed to keep it all.
