About this deal

Susan's prison visit was spoofed in the 1996 film The Cable Guy, where Jim Carrey opens his shirt, presses his naked breast against the glass, and cries, 'Oh, Billy!'

Midnight Express Making-Of: a Lesson in Filmmaking History". 6 February 2014. mentorless.com. 2 June 2014. Archived from the original on 7 July 2018 . Retrieved 6 July 2018.But both the book and the movie were very damaging to U.S.-Turkish relations. Americans, as with most people, are only too willing to blame foreigners for their problems. The drug problem was already headline material at the time; President Nixon had declared “war” on the drug trade. I really shudder at those words now.

But she turned out to be right. Her daughter had been one of four Americans arrested. Their van had been found filled with hashish. They were apparently on their way to Germany through Greece and were going to take a ferry boat from Turkey. In any case, from then on, I was deeply involved. In fact, later on, when I became the DCM [deputy chief of mission] in Ankara, the four were still in jail. I was there when they were finally released in the late ‘70s… For me it was pretty compelling reading. It has aged well (1977 it was published), and doesn't suffer from being a generation or two old. Four stars for me.

Midnight Express”, is the harrowing real life story of William “Billy” Hayes and his incarceration in some of the most inhospitable conditions a man convicted of a crime, can ever envisage. Tried and sentenced to a ridiculous term of 30 years for attempting to smuggle hashish, Hayes finds himself tossed away into the bowels of an unhygienic prison manned by a trio of inhuman wretches, who are euphemism for guards. Sagmalcilar is a resting place for the damned and the degenerate. Filthy, raucous and chaotic, it is segregated into various ‘kogus’ (dormitories or wards in Turkish). The privileged and tidy kogus is reserved for the ‘kapidiye’ (the much feared Mafiosi who keep even the prison authorities in constant dread). The left over kogus is for the lesser mortals. A fast paced one sitting read, Midnight Express is definitely not for the faint hearted. Whether it be the torments that are a way of life at Sagmalcilar, or the jaw dropping intransigence of the Turkish legal system, where the word “justice” transcends from being a noble concept to a n impotent misnomer, to the insane escape itself attempted by Hayes, the book is gasp inducing. Beads of sweat automatically form on the brows of the reader as the suspense and anticipation leaves her absolutely poleaxed and stupefied. A group of wraiths are sent to gather information for the Hierarchy about a Great War-era scandal; however, some want the information protected, no matter the cost.

Ans: Mortimer saw a picture in a book in his childhood and exactly the same picture and the book he sees when he is an adult man. He meets a man whose face exactly looks like his own face.Well, yes it was pretty shit. It was prison after all. If it was meant to be a treat they'd have sent him to a 5 star hotel. And young Billy was a little bit on the silly side, oh yes, silly Billy trying to get on a US bound plane with a couple of k's of hashish jammed down your trousers. Regardless of your opinions on Bill's poor decision making and how he ended up in prison in the first place, the book does make compelling reading and he gets full marks for honesty. The writing style is a bit jagged and uneven, but he's not a polished or practised writer, simply a man with a story to tell. And tell it he does. In 1975, Billy's girlfriend, Susan Kahre, comes to see him. Devastated at what has happened to Billy, she tells him that he has to escape or he will die in there. She leaves him a scrapbook with money hidden inside as "a picture of your good friend Mr. Franklin from the bank" in the hope that Billy can use it to help him escape. Her visit moves Billy strongly, and he regains his senses. So this one of those books I am surprised I haven't read before now. Fairly well known, the plug on the cover says 'A harrowing true story in the great Papillion tradition', which it really is.

Hayes was a young American student sent to a Turkish prison for trying to smuggle hashish out of Turkey. The film deviates from the book's accounts of the story, especially in its portrayal of Turks, and some have criticised this version, including Billy Hayes himself. Later, both Stone and Hayes expressed their regret about how Turkish people were portrayed in the film. The film's title is prison slang for an inmate's escape attempt. While desperately trying to survive the harsh environment of Istanbul’s Sagmalcilar Prison, Hayes and a few fellow inmates made attempts to catch the midnight express (prison slang for escape). Hayes ended up spending a total of five years incarcerated before fleeing to Greece at the end of 1975. Arnold, Gary (October 28, 1978). "Sensationalistic Trip on The 'Midnight Express '". Storie di vite vissute al limite estremo della sopportazione, parole e pagine che ti entrano dentro e cominciano a sedimentare, ti danno consapevolezza, perchè sai che è vero quello che stai leggendo, quasi non ci credi, ma lo sai che è vero.
