About this deal

In the world of Noughts & Crosses, racism is not ‘fixed’ – it is simply inverted. Photograph: Ilze Kitshoff/BBC/Mammoth Screen The long-awaited autobiography of one of the world's greatest children's writers, and an empowering and inspiring account of a life in books. So without me jabbering on any longer, if you're a fan of the Noughts and Crosses series, I suggest you read Crossfire and Endgame (Endgame follows directly on from Crossfire). Though quite different in matter compared to Noughts and Crosses, the main principle is still there and the writing is as good as ever.

Even without knowing the remainder of the series, the first chunk of the book had me hooked and at no point did I feel as though I missed vital information or pivotal points that are from previous books. The story flowed very smoothly and didn’t overload with an information dump or plot dot points either. The whole pace of the book was well balanced and shaped nicely, even with the intense moments scattered throughout the book. Sephy Hadley was one of the guests that night. Haunted by the idea that she didn't do enough to stop the death of her first love, Callum McGregor, Sephy will not sit quietly and wait for accusations to fall on her now. She has her children to protect. Written for World Book Day 2003, An Eye For an Eye has been republished in a new edition of Noughts & Crosses. It describes one evening while Sephy is pregnant with Callie Rose when her sister, Minerva, visits her. Minerva offers to patch up things with Jasmine, but Sephy tries to get Minerva to leave, as Sephy was worried about being followed by Jude. As Minerva visits, Jude arrives in the apartment after days of following Sephy, intent on killing Sephy. In many ways, people are more divided than ever. Aggressive lines are drawn on race, politics, class. Powerful dark corners of society have friends in high-up places. The media can't be trusted.Overall, if you loved the Noughts and Crosses series, like me, and you really want to read it, go for it; however, if you've just stubbled across it, I recommend all the books that came before it in the series far more than this. Crossfire could definitely go amiss if you're not as in love with the series as me and other fans.

As a reader I usually take away something from books I love: sometimes it is the amazing use of language, other times its characters so vivid you want to become their friends, love stories so encompassing you want to marry them (ah!) or a message so resonating that you squeal in recognition: yes this! This is how I feel too. Attempting to provoke Jude, Sephy tells him that Kamal gave Callum the choice to save his life or to keep their baby and Callum chose their baby. Jude loses his temper and tries to shoot her, but his gun jams. Minerva, in an attempt to save Sephy and herself, runs towards the front door and screams for help. She fails and Jude shoots her in the shoulder. The Nought and Crosses saga (which I think we can totally go there now with three generations of both) is one of those stories that has all of the above and more.Fullerton, Huw (11 April 2018). "Doctor Who and Being Human writer set to script YA adaptation Noughts and Crosses". Radio Times . Retrieved 21 August 2018. On 5 November 2019 BBC News included Noughts & Crosses on its list of the 100 most inspiring novels. [14] We have Callie, now 30, a lawyer preparing to be a judge. She still regrets her behaviour as a teenager when she let jealousy get the better of her. Her feelings for her boyfriend Tobey were complicated, but even more so now. Tobey is about to become the first Nought Prime Minister, but he is accused of murdering a well-known businessman thought to have underground links. He wants Callie to represent him. Eva Foxton: An old nurse who becomes a mother figure for Dan, eventually succeeding him as the leader of his gang, the Outfit. The book Noughts and Crosses is an alternate reality fiction based in a 22nd-century parallel universe. Their world is similar to the reality of the 21st century, with equivalent types of jobs, of government, and so on. Racial inequality is the driving force of the storyline, and there are few laws or constitutional protections to prevent discrimination. There are two races in the book: the Crosses (darker-skinned people) are the dominant race with the individuals owning most of the wealth, good jobs, different and better schools etc. The second race, the Noughts (lighter-skinned people) are at the poorer end of society usually doing manual labour or being servants to Crosses, with poor schools – if any at all.

Newcomers to Noughts and Crosses would be advised to start at the beginning as Endgame draws heavily on what has come before, not least the murder of gangster Dan Jeavons and the kidnapping of Troy and Libby. Tobey's guilt over Rebecca's death leads him to believe he no longer deserves Callie Rose, estranging himself from her. Sephy and Nathan marry, and she's pregnant with a son, Troy, by Callie Rose's next birthday. During the party, Tobey and Callie Rose have a huge argument over his continued secrecy about his involvement in McAuley's death. He decides to end his and Callie Rose's relationship for good.Libby - the daughter of Tobey, abducted along with troy. Tensions are high between them, with them both being strong willed and stubborn. Betsey Biggalow the Detective (illustrated by Lis Toft), Piccadilly Press, 1992, ISBN 1-85340-163-3 The Guardian ranked Noughts & Crosses #88 in its list of 100 Best Books of the 21st Century.
