This makes Hotaru begin to harass Kokonotsu about candy all the time and allows the anime to become a Japanese candy commercial. Honestly, I had forgotten about the premise of the series because they hardly ever mention it again in favor of talking about candy all the time (can you tell how annoyed I am that I was roped into watching an anime that is literally just about candy?). While the character interactions are spot on, the jokes themselves are very hit or miss. For most caucasians, you won't find most, if any of the jokes funny. About the story, it was pretty okay. You have a bunch of teens living in the countryside and doing the usual stuff. They sometimes go to the "dagashi" shop and talk about the origin of the sweets they eat. There is not much more to it. So, if you like deep anime with a serious plot, this is not it. It's more a "product" anime that you watch for your own enjoyment or to kill some time. Kokonotsu is our put upon protagonist- charged with running his absentee dad's candy shop (which apparently is famous, yet has no other customers besides mostly Hotaru, but also Saya and To). He flip flops between being white dwarf-level dense and a go-getter, but ultimately settles for being another trope-guy. Just by looking at the cover, you'll know at first's glance the character who's going to be subjected to fanservice. Yep, that's Hotaru. The show is going to be playing with her extremely large breasts in almost every episode so strap on if you want to see candy crumbs falling on her breasts or if you want to see a Slimey/Watery white candy (I forget what it was called) exploding on her face. Who said I can't enjoy a 24 minutes candy commercial? There are times where I found the show to be quite boring but most of the time, I did enjoy the show and it was a fun ride. Though, I won't be missing this show so good riddance.Though in decline due to convenience stores, dagashiya can still be found in Japan, with around 50 in the Tokyo area. He finds himself working the cashier job for the shop, but that doesn't stop him from drawing manga during his shift. There just small problems but the one true problem lies in the dub. The sub doesn't really have that much problems with the script but the dub has some really cringe worthy moments and I mean really cringe worthy moments. Hajime has few other clothes besides her Office Lady outfit. Enforced, since those are the only clothes she owns, as she'd be homeless and jobless if not for Kokonotsu taking her in and all her pay goes to cover her living expenses.
in that we got more jokes, more characters, less focus on the sweets jargon and a reinforced and improved cast that was just as brilliant as they were weird. I just couldn't stop laughing in this season at everyone compared to the last where I was seen Google searching the sweets for a bit of context or relying on translation notes so I consider this a plus point. Then we had the sudden disappearance of an important character but to be honest I found that disappearance better since that departure led to further introductions of new characters like Owari Hajime and Beniyutaka who were vibrant, cheerful, unique and as mentioned hilarious. Did I mention they were also weird like everyone else?

Atsushi Abe (Kokonotsu's Japanese voice actor) voiced Moritaka Mashiro of Bakuman who became an actual mangaka and he had his own anime by the end of the series run. Coincidentally Mashiro's main rival, Eiji Niizuma used to live in the countryside before he moved to Tokyo to continue his job as a mangaka. Both of them started to draw manga with Mashiro at 14 years old while Niizuma being 15 years old.

Overall, you will definitely enjoy this anime if you had a childhood that can relate to this anime. If you don't, just take this experience to build a list of Dagashi that you want to buy when you visit Japan for a holiday. Missing Mom: Not once did anyone mention Kokonotsu's mother. Since she doesn't actually appear in the manga proper, it would be reasonable to assume she had either died or gotten divorced from Yo, the former of which seems more likely since she's been missing since his younger days. Hotaru is introduced sitting at a bus stop, struggling to open a metal dagashi container. The final episode of season 1 has her sitting at the same bus stop, trying to open the same container, until Kokonotsu shows her how to do it with a ten yen coin. When he and Yō are about to fight, Hotaru Shidare came in the shop and Kokonotsu was mesmerized by her at first sight. Kokonotsu then tells Yō that there's a customer although his father left him.
