About this deal

Brake fluid is essential for ensuring your brakes work as they should. It transmits the force applied when your foot pushes the brake pedal to the brake calipers or wheel cylinders, which then applies the brakes and slows down or stops the vehicle. Brake fluid also lubricates the hydraulic system and helps prevent corrosion, so it’s important to keep it sufficiently topped up. It is worth noting that this type of fluid starts to boil at the lowest temperature of any type of brake fluid out there. More precisely the dry boiling point is at about 401 degrees Fahrenheit while the wet boiling point is at about 284 degrees Fahrenheit.

DOT 5 is a silicone-based fluid and is separate from the series of DOT 2, 3, 4, 5.1. It is immiscible with water, and with other brake fluids, and must not be mixed with them. Systems can change fluid only after a complete system changeover, such as a total restoration. There are several types of fluid, grouped under two headings: those that are glycol-based and those based on silicone. It has a completely different chemical structure since it’s made out of silicone and it does not resemble the glycol-based compounds in any way possible. This is why manufacturers gave it a distinctive purple color to make it different so people would not mix these two types of fluid. The disadvantage of mineral oil is that it’s unregulated and as a result, not all mineral oils are created equal. The newest addition to the TRW brake fluid range isthe DOT 5.1 ESP. Ideal for heavy, high performance cars, DOT 5.1 provides an extra level of safety, which can cope with ambient temperatures from -50 oC up to +50 oC, meaning brakes will perform to their best in all conditions. Silicone-based brake fluid is an alternative to glycol-ether and it doesn’t damage paintwork. However, some people have found it doesn’t provide the same firm feeling of braking when pressing the foot brake. Water absorption Therefore, it becomes less effective over time and starts overheating your brake system. This way, it can damage your vehicle’s brake system and that’s why it’s critical to change on time. The addition of moisture reduces the boiling point of the brake fluid and if you don’t change it in time, it’ll start corroding the rubber parts of your master cylinder and wheel cylinders. DOT (Department of Transport) 4 is one of the most commonly used types of brake fluid that’s based on glycol ether. It’s pretty similar to DOT 3 brake fluid but contains borate-ester additives.

But what does the DOT means? Well, this is only an abbreviation for the Department of Transportation. This is the institution that standardizes these types of fluids and makes them a standard on cars. If you’re using DOT 4 brake fluid, you can switch to DOT 3 but not the other way around. While DOT 3 and DOT 4 are intermixable, mixing them together isn’t advisable because it can degrade the overall performance of your brake system. DOT 4 brake fluids are glycol ether-based and have an addition of borate esters, which improves their performance. Some of the things that the borate esters improve are the wet and dry boiling points. DOT 4 brake fluid has a higher and more stable boiling point compared to DOT 3. However, when it begins to absorb water, the boiling point falls more rapidly than the DOT 3 brake fluid.A Lubricant: Lubricants such as polypropylene or polythene keeps the parts moving freely from 20% to 40%. For a faster reaction of the ABS and ESP systems, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 brake fluids exist with low viscosity meeting the maximum 750 mm 2/s viscosity at −40°C (−40°F) requirement of ISO 4925 class 6. [2] These are often named DOT 4+ or Super DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 ESP.
