About this deal

Glendronach 16 yo 1994/2011 (56%, OB for K&L Wine Merchants USA, Pedro Ximenez Puncheon, cask #3186, 606 bottles) - 221213 Glendronach 11 yo 2003/2014 (54.8%, OB, for Aroma Taiwan, Pedro Ximenez puncheon, cask #4002, 687 bottles) - 310817 Billy’s vision was to see GlenDronach return to its traditional Sherry style of single malt whisky. Filling of Bourbon casks was immediately ceased and in 2009, much to the delight of malt fans across the world, GlenDronach “re-released” its iconic core range of 12, 15 and 18 year old 100% Sherried single malts. This review was prompted after a friend recommended the GlenDronach 12 to me. With strong advocacy, they described it as a whisky that ventured beyond the traditional boundaries, a description that resonated with my curiosity. Intrigued, I managed to grab a bottle from my local spirits purveyor, determined to experience this for myself. Glendronach 28 yo 1993/2022 (53.2%, OB, for La Maison du Whisky, Oloroso puncheon, cask #7099, 630 bottles) - 260922

Things were going very well, but two key events over the next few years saw ownership of the distillery change hands and Allardice eventually losing his share in GlenDronach. The first was a fire in February 1837 that practically burned the distillery to the ground. Business suffered after the fire and some of the original partners retired, thereby opening the door for Walter Scott, former clerk and then distillery manager at Teaninich to become a new and equal partner of Allardice. The distillery was repaired, and business continued to flourish until the financial crisis of 1842 left Allardice bankrupt. The remaining partners bought his share and Walter Scott took the reins. The distillery flourished under his stewardship, expanding significantly between 1860 – 1880 and selling more whisky than any other distillery in Scotland during that time. Nose: Light and fruity, mainly banana and some apricots, but finally a touch of orange zest too. There’s a whiff of breakfast tea, bung cloth and macadamia nuts also. Not the most expressive, but satisfying nonetheless. On the palate, The Macallan 12 Sherry Oak offers a delightful evolution of flavours. The notes of hot pastries, marmalade, and citrus peels create a vivid and vibrant taste profile. As you explore further, the whisky reveals intense sweetness from barley sugar, vanilla, and sherried dried fruits, captivating the palate with depth and richness. This complexity is staggering for a 12-year-old expression, making Macallan 12 a standout choice among its peers, especially the GlenDronach 12.GlenDronach 13 yo 2003/2016 (52.3%, OB, Pedro Ximenez sherry puncheon finish, cask #4034, 696 bottles) - 190122 Glendronach 24 yo 1993/2017 (53.5%, OB for Andy’s Selection, Taiwan, sherry butt, cask #407, 633 bottles) - 230720

Glendronach 18 yo 1996/2014 (55.3%, OB for The Dram Brothers, Madeira hogsheads, cask #4766) - 300514 Glendronach 18 yo 1994/2013 (56.6%, OB, Taiwan, oloroso sherry butt, cask #68, 621 bottles) - 280414Glendronach 21 yo 1993/2014 (52.1%, OB for Whiskybase, oloroso sherry butt, cask #23, 681 bottles) - 221214

The 10 Years old Forgue is an attempt to put GlenDronach on he Travel-Retail market. It's Non Chill-Filtered, does not contain artificial colouring and is bottled at a reasonable 43% although 46% would have been better of course. It's not a bad Single Malt but it's not as good as all the other GlenDronach Malts I have tasted with the exception of the 8 Year old Hielan. But I quite clearly prefer the 12 Years and, believe it or not, the last one is cheaper than the Forgue. That does not make sense and I hope that GlenDronach (one of my favourite Malts) will review this policy in the future. GlenDronach always put Quality first and Marketing second and I do hope it stays that way. Too many popular distilleries have gone the other way around unfortunately! GlenDronach 27 yo 1993/2021 (54.2%, OB, for LMDW Conquête, France, oloroso sherry puncheon, cask #7274, 674 bottles) - 201023 Glendronach 26 yo 1992/2018 (52%, OB for The Whisky Barrel, PX puncheon, cask #8314, 706 bottles) - 230720 Glendronach 26 yo 1992/2018 (50.5%, OB, for The Whisky Barrel, sherry butt, cask #180, 539 bottles) - 230720 This release is named after Scotland’s Forgue valley, in which the distillery is located, but that’s about the only information there is to share, except for the maturation in PX and oloroso sherry casks. Granted, that’s not super inspiring, but I guess that doesn’t really matter, because I bet there’s not much of an overlap between the average traveler and readers of this blog. GlenDronach 10 Years Forgue (43%, OB, 2019) Glendronach 11 yo 2003/2014 (55.3%, OB, for Taiwan, Pedro Ximenez puncheon, cask #4006, 690 bottles) - 290817

Glendronach 24 yo 1993/2017 (60.6%, OB for Abbey Whisky, sherry butt, cask #652, 544 bottles) - 230720 Known as “the sleeping giant”, GlenDronach is one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries and only the second to be granted a license to produce whisky after the Excise Act of 1823. James Allardice, a remarkable and extroverted man who loved a drink and a good time, founded the distillery on the Boynsmill Estate in 1826. It’s believed that illicit distillation had actually been taking place at the estate for years before the excise act was passed, but this was undetected thanks to an ingenious alarm system in the form of a colony of rooks nesting in the trees, which would create a hell of a commotion when disturbed… an excellent warning system for the approach of Customs & Excise agents. You are responsible for all activities through your account.
