You can use hammer-ons to add articulation to your guitar playing. Articulation refers to how you play and connect notes. Articulation gives your music expression and enables you to make your guitar talk, sing, and even cry. This process produces a smooth, continuous change in pitch (sometimes called a glissando, or portamento, which is more correct). Descending immediate slide: A “descending immediate slide” usually occurs after you hold a note for a while. It gives a long note a fancy ending. The more money you invest in a guitar, the more likely you are to get an instrument that has a built-in tuner in it, which can be super handy to have. Step three: Learn to identify your stringsBy this point, I’m sure you’re thinking — that’s great and all, but how am I going to actually get my guitar tuned? As you probably don’t have perfect pitch or note recall to be able to tune every string by ear (not many of us do!), you’ll probably need a little help getting there. And, good news, you have some options here. Chromatic Tuner These are the kind of exercises I take beginner guitarists through all the time. It takes some time, but hang in there; your guitar skills will improve in time! Ride the Rhythm to Master Guitar Techniques There are so many different moving parts that go into playing the guitar, but depending upon what type of musical experience you have (if any), learning how to follow rhythm may be the hardest part for you to master. There is absolutely no song in the world that doesn’t have a rhythm, so while you may be able to get away from playing songs that don’t feature a melody or a harmony, but you won’t be able to get away from playing music with rhythm. Now, once you’re cozy with the scale, it’s time to sprinkle in some guitar techniques. I love using the longer rhythms to work on my bends and vibrato—it’s like adding a bit of spice to a dish. And for the speedy stuff like hammer-ons and pull-offs, those eighth notes are your best pals. It’s all about keeping it clean and rhythmic, you know? Crafting Solos with Motifs and Pacing Now that you’ve chosen your preferred method for tuning assistance, let’s put everything you’ve learned into practice. Tuning a guitar to itself using the fifth-fret method is an important and useful guitar skill. The fifth-fret method is the most common type of relative tuning, and it's all you need if you're planning on playing by yourself.In this instance, E will turn into E-flat, D will turn into D-flat, and so on. When using your chromatic tuner or tuning app, it will be easy to tell when you’ve hit a flat note, even if you’re not particularly adept at reading music. Time for Tuning Basics When you practice arpeggios, be sure to play them from low to high slowly, loudly, and deliberately at first to ensure you can play the notes cleanly. Then play them faster and lighter to produce the sound of arpeggios as they appear in real music. However, no matter how you play them, be sure to maintain your starting tempo and dynamic level (loudness) throughout each arpeggio. Take a look at the following music. Notice that at bar 8 you switch positions, jumping up to 9th position between beats 2 and 3. Try to let that half note ring for as long as possible before making the jump, but don’t be late for beat 3! This mid-measure jump allows you to play the chorus of the second phrase an octave higher. The song doesn’t really do that, but this makes it more interesting. Plus it gives you a workout in different positions.

When you’re feeling like your hands are getting tired, your fingertips are sore, or your wrists are starting to feel strained, take a break and listen to some music! Don’t worry- it’s totally normal for your fingers to hurt a bit. Learning how to play a basic chord breaks down to figuring out what to do with your left hand and your right hand. Assuming that your right hand is your dominant hand, your right hand is going to be the hand that strums your guitar, while your left hand is going to be on the fretboard of the guitar (the hand that fingers out the chords). If your left hand happens to be your dominant hand, your left hand is going to be the hand that’s strumming and your right hand will be the hand that’s fingering all of the chord positions. If the wobbling gets faster, you are moving away from being in tune. Tuning is a skill that takes time to develop, so don’t be put off if you find it hard to do at first. (Image credit: Future) Lesson 2: Holding your guitarMany chromatic tuners and tuning apps will provide on-screen frequency read-outs for the note that you are playing. While it’s simple and effective just to match the name of the note desired, it can also help to utilize frequency matching.
