About this deal

It shouldn’t be too difficult, since both adapters and cables are widely available, and many devices use the same scheme. DVI does not use packetization, but rather transmits the pixel data as if it were a rasterized analog video signal. Therefore, if your computer sends a higher resolution DVI signal, it will be restricted by the lower resolution of VGA. DVI-I and DVI-D are more common, DVI-A is mostly used in older electronics such as VCRs and whatnot.

If you have a DVI-I output, a simple passive adapter like the one mentioned above will work to connect to a VGA display. Coordinated Video Timings-Reduced Blanking (CVT-RB) is a VESA standard which offers reduced horizontal and vertical blanking for non-CRT based displays. ratio can make clock recovery difficult, as phase-locked loops, if used, need to work over a large frequency range. Fixed frequency interfaces, like DisplayPort, need to reconstruct the clock from the transmitted data. While some quality issues like signal degradation in longer VGA cables can be avoided by using an adapter near the video source, the digital-to-analog conversion necessitated by the VGA port does degrade signal quality. As the two schemes yield different 10-bit symbols, a receiver can fully differentiate between active and control regions.

Please include what you were doing when this page came up and the Cloudflare Ray ID found at the bottom of this page. The analog section of the DVI specification document is brief and points to other specifications like VESA VSIS [16] for electrical characteristics and GTFS for timing information. There's also the less common scenario where a GPU on an older computer needs to send its signal to a newer display device with no VGA connector. The signals sent by the port are different from VGA and we need a convertor for connecting a VGA monitor to DVI-A port.

The difference may not be noticeable for text or even SD (standard definition) video but can be seen for HD videos and hi-resolution images or on hi-res displays. IEEE 1394 was proposed by High-Definition Audio-Video Network Alliance ( HANA Alliance) for all cabling needs, including video, over coax or 1394 cable as a combined data stream. To wrap it up, DVI is a useful and versatile connector, but I wouldn’t use it for your main display. This is especially true for computer monitors, which rarely have the quality converting processing that their TV cousins do.
