About this deal

The label on the bottle depicts seagulls, which symbolize the proximity of the distillery to the sea, and the sea salt notes that form a vital characteristic of Oban’s flavor profile. The bottle also talks about the Oban region’s history and lineage which is part Viking and part Celt and how the early descendants came to be. All this definitely adds to the experience of enjoying a dram of Oban 14. You are responsible for all activities through your account. It is distilled from lightly-peated malt, aged in refill ex-Bourbon casks, chill-filtered, and bottled at 43% strength. Oban 14 Years Old – Review Oban distillery ( / ˈ oʊ b ə n/ ⓘ OH-bən; [1] Scottish Gaelic: Taigh-stail an Òbain) is a whisky distillery in the Scottish west coast port of Oban. Established in 1794, it was built before the town of the same name, which sprang up later in the surrounding craggy harbour. [2] Oban in Scots Gaelic means’ little bay’ and describes the distillery’s location near the shore of Sound of Kerrera on the coast of the Hebrides. At the plant’s founding in 1793, the town of Oban had not yet been founded. In its early days, the location worked as a brewery, producing ale for inhabitants of the newly laid town. After a few years, the first distillations were recorded.

Based in the Western Highlands, Oban (pronounced OH-bun, with the stress on the “OH,” not OH-BANN), creates a distinct style of malt whisky that is one of the standbys of the whisky world. How does Little Bay compare to the ubiquitous Oban 14? We put them head to head… I try to never fully set my opinion on a whisk(e)y till I get the opportunity to do a proper review at home, aka a controlled environment, and I have the opportunity to fully concentrate on it and it alone… and now I have, so here it is. The aroma of the Oban 14 is rustic and charry but not in a homey kind of way, more bitter. The Palate is citrus and malt driven with a bit of smoky char and the finish is an unremarkable mix of the two. Nothing terrible, but terribly unremarkable.

Oban’s small, onion-shaped, slow-running stills give the spirit a sulphury character and viscous mouthfeel. But to keep the flavor light, the distillers take breaks between runs to open the doors and expose the inside of the pot to oxygen — which helps rejuvenate the copper. John Butler. "Pronunciation of Scotch Whiskys". School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh . Retrieved 12 Oct 2014. Both the Macallan and Oban are single malt scotch whisky products — which are required by law to be produced in Scotland at a single distillery using a mash bill or grain recipe of 100 percent malted barley. The distillery remained closed for renovations between 1968 and 1972 and finally, in 1989 the Oban distillery was acquired by Diageo and is operating under UDV ever since. The distillery was built in 1794 by the brothers John and Hugh Stevenson and operated by them until 1866, when it was bought by Peter Curnstie. It was then acquired by Walter Higgin in 1883 and rebuilt. In 1898, Alexander Edward, who also owned Aultmore Distillery, bought out Higgin. In its first year of operation, it suffered major losses when a major blending company, Pattison's of Leith, went under. In 1923, Oban was sold to Dewars and joined Distillers Company with that company in 1925. It fell silent from 1931 until 1937 and again from 1969 to 1972 when a new still house was built. In 1989 a new visitors' centre was installed. [4] Bottlings [ edit ]

Oban 14 offers a unique experience of uniting Highland scotch’s fruitiness with the Islands’ smoky character. While regional microclimate may influence the whisky, I believe it is always about the people and their social heritage that brings out the true essence. And it is no surprise that this tiny west Highland distillery can produce a dram that is well deserved to be recognized as one of the “Six Classic Malts of Scotland”.
