About this deal

Meanwhile outside of the castle itself a POW can always be arrested since they aren’t supposed to be there. The game also comes with a supplementary historical booklet as well as some extras that we’ll cover in the components section that make this not only a game but a really informative learning experience as well. I was actually surprised at how much I had to think in this game after reading the movement rules, because if you suddenly roll really high you have a world of options and don’t want to squander them. German pawns (black) try to position themselves to block entrances and to chase down those prisoners whispering in the corner.

g. a throw of 8 entitles the Escape Officer to move one of his men 8 circles or one 3 circles and another 5 circles, or any other combination he wishes. From the Red Cross Package, to the larger-than-the-rule-book Historical background book Osprey crammed in a feast of history, theme and personality. Escape Officers may combine members of their respective teams if they wish and may employ false trails, distractions and bluffs to confuse and outwit the German Security Forces.

The logic of this seems slightly odd, as the major part of the game used to be spent in gathering the requisite four items [food, documents, disguise and a compass] to create an Escape Kit, as well as items such as wire cutters, rope, keys and passes to use on your route out of the castle. One player takes the part of the German Security Officer; the other players take the part of an Escape Officer, each representing a different nation's Prisoners of War (PoW). It will tell them how many rolls of the dice they have to try and get one of their prisoners out of Colditz. Even though my childhood was filled with games like Monopoly where you had to roll dice to move, that particular mechanic has been mostly fazed out of the modern board game industry.

A lovely touch is the replicas of prisoner paraphernalia: Game-play cards are enclosed within an authentic Red Cross package and you can find out more about P. Another friend waited for several turns at the front gate of the prison next to a guard (there are “safe” places where players are safe from arrest). The map and clever use of the Opportunity Cards afford many avenues of escape, and there is only so much a determined German player can do to deter what seems to be an inevitable outcome. He may, however, elect to discard one without using it or he may exchange it with another Escape Officer or even give it away. This gives the game a very cooperative feel, but it is still about seeing who can get 2 of their POWs out first to win, so don’t help the other too much. For the Germans, there’s strategy on how many guards you have out on the board, and how many you keep back in the guard room to appear on the board at key times and in important locations.

You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Now a significant part of that task is done for you, though once again all is discretionary and you can dispense with this change as you wish. He had chiseled through the hard concrete floor of his cell, abseiled down the 60-foot drop with little more than a fraying rope around his waist to trust and squeezed through slicing threads of severed barbed wire. So I’ve been eagerly anticipating the release of this game for a few months now, and playing it did not disappoint! Not only does rolling doubles release a prisoner from solitary, it grants the player another 2d6 roll to add to the previous one, plus another roll if the player is lucky enough to roll doubles twice in a row.In 1972, Invicta Plastics published an unrelated board game designed by 18-year-old Adrian Wild titled Escape from Colditz Castle. A Coloured Legend Diagram printed on the front inside cover of this booklet focuses on certain areas of the board and explains their purpose. A PoW who is escaping down rope or through wire and wants to get back into the Castle, must forfeit another appropriate equipment card. However, game play would undoubtedly be improved with more players, and therefore allied forces, due to increased complexity in strategies employed.

Despite this, he gave the game a rating of 4 out of 6, saying, " Escape from Colditz should provide many hours of enjoyment for most members of the family. In just a few turns, one of those prisoners intentionally ran into a prison guard (which is a way to temporarily remove a guard from the board at the expense of sending a prisoner to solitary), while another prisoner from the tunnel escaped through the fence. A smart player can use this to clear the way for an escape, hopefully giving them the time needed to pull off something spectacular. Since the castle is situated on a rocky outcrop above the River Mulde, the Germans believed it to be an ideal site for a high security prison. To wrap up this review I have to stop and chat about the packaging because it’s clear Osprey wanted to make this game feel a little bit special. This is a window into the life of Pat Reid, and the experiences he had during the latter stages of the war. Gone is the swastika to be replaced by the Prussian eagle - definitely a sign of changing times, attitudes and concerns about sensibilities. It’s stories like these that seem to be plucked straight from Hollywood movies that make Escape from Colditz an exceedingly enjoyable and often cinematic experience. Post more Guards but only on the vacant black circles, from his reserve in the Kommandantur: as many as he wishes up to the total number of this throw.
