About this deal

Onto the book. It was billed as the ‘A to Z Atlas and Guide to London and Suburbs’. The cover was proud to announce the maps included house numbers along main streets and 23,000 streets (9,000 more than any other similar atlas index).

Clubland is not a map of nightclubs but instead of the gentlemen’s clubs, many of which are still functioning today. The main brands of smartphone come with their own free mapping and location apps, most commonly powered by Google, Microsoft (Bing), Nokia (Here), and most recently Apple. The apps provide a global mapping database that covers the full range of scales from a world map down to the neighbourhood level. They provide location searches and multiple mapping layers, such as road mapping and aerial photography. Higher functionality can include turn-by-turn routing and public transport info. The accuracy of the mapping and the app functionality varies between the apps mentioned above, and within each app it commonly varies by country. Comparison of A-Z app and iOS A-Z London apps The main mapping extends beyond Central London from Heathrow Airport to Chingford at a scale of 2.88 inches to 1 mile, featuring postcode districts, one-way streets, the Congestion Charging Zone and Low Emission Zone. In South Kensington, while the Natural History Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum are noted the Science Museum is not. It was there at the time but was clearly not considered as important.

Unless indicated to the contrary, the index shows districts and various facilities or places of interest in colour to make them easy to see., with separate listings of hospitals/healthcare facilities and railway/underground/etc, stations. All versions all include a diagram of London Transport’s Underground/Overground/DLR network. Stanford’s presentation of the individual atlases includes an image showing the extent of the coverage. She also took on the laborious task of card indexing the street names alphabetically in preparation for typesetting. At around the age of 29, Pearsall directed some draughtsmen to begin drawing up this new type of street map while she compiled much of the information necessary to update the maps. It’s sais she walked the streets of London for up to 18 hours a day hand plotting the street alignment and compiling ancillary information including house numbers along principal thoroughfares.

The large-scale street map of Central London – at a scale of 5.75 inches to 1 mile – cover Regent’s Park and Shoreditch, Chelsea and Vauxhall, Hyde Park and Bermondsey. Bethnal Green Museum is now the V&A Museum of Childhood. And the Home Office Industrial Museum is long gone so you can no longer see “appliances for the promotion of health amongst industrial workers”.

You can use your device’s inbuilt location services to show your current location on the map or follow your movements as you travel.

I moved a lot when I first came to London (25 times in 5 years) so I really got to know the A-Z. In the days before Google maps and mobile phones, the book was an essential item in any Londoner’s bag. Straight away I was comparing with now and found plenty of differences as well as plenty that has remained.

Suburban drivers (also known as Yellow Badge drivers) can choose from London's nine suburban sectors. They must know between 30 and 51 runs in detail. They also need to know all landmarks and places of interest on the runs. Geographers’ Map Company was founded in 1936 by Phyllis Pearsall MBE (1906-1996) who, encouraged by her father Alexander Gross, took on the ambitious task of publishing up-to-date street mapping of London. The wallpaper is PVC free and is printed using HP's Latex inks ensuring you get a more environmentally friendly mural compared to one produced with solvent inks. It is also odor-free making it safe for all rooms in the home and commercial interiors where the initial solvent smell would be an issue such as schools, restaurants, cafes and offices. The ultra smooth finish and the latex base of the inks provide vivid colour graphics with high-definition detail. urn:lcp:azlondon0000unse:epub:7eb495d2-f7a2-44a1-9056-e66d96668a8b Foldoutcount 0 Identifier azlondon0000unse Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t0ps5r238 Invoice 1652 Isbn 1843480204 Ocr tesseract 4.1.1 Ocr_detected_lang en Ocr_detected_lang_conf 1.0000 Ocr_detected_script Cyrillic Ocr_module_version 0.0.5 Ocr_parameters -l eng Old_pallet IA15200 Openlibrary_edition

I was reminded the Queen wasn’t the Queen when this book was published. And if you wanted to visit the Royal Stables you had to write for permission. Now, The Royal Mews is open to all. I discovered the Agricultural Hall in Islington is now the Business Design Centre. It was used for large cattle, horse and dog shows as well as trade exhibitions. The Geographers' A–Z Street Atlas and the story of how Phyllis Pearsall came to write the first edition covering London were featured in a 2005 episode of Nicholas Crane's Map Man TV programme. This revealed that, on all their maps, A–Z print a non-existent trap street so that they can tell if a map has been illegally copied from theirs, a technique used by several publishers of reference works (see fictitious entry).
