About this deal

This first story, The Best Friend, has all the makings of a real tearjerker, with Gotaro being a sweet, sensitive soul who only wants what he believes to be best for his daughter. And, despite having raised her well, has never felt like he ever was what’s best for her. On the other hand I was close to crying three times while reading which had nothing to do with reading the rules for time travel repeatedly so we could say it was a very good novel in succeeding to hit the sentimental, emotional, or just plain mawkish spot. When I read the original Before the Coffee Gets Cold, I felt that the book was great in spite of its twee and silly rules and conceits. Perhaps she meant: yes, you can return to the past, but why not come inside first before deciding whether to go or not. For a parent, a child is a child forever. Never ever expecting anything in return, she was simply a mother who wanted her child to be happy, always, to shower him with love.”

People don’t see things and hear things as objectively as they might think. The visual and auditory information that enters the mind is distorted by experiences, thoughts, circumstances, wild fancies, prejudices, preferences, knowledge, awareness, and countless other workings of the mind.” The book even includes a character map at the beginning, to help us remember who is connected to whom and how. Our cast of lovable characters is growing, as is the cafe itself. People tend to feel happy when spring arrives, especially after a cold winter. When spring begins, however, cannot be pinpointed to one particular moment. There is no one day that clearly marks when winter ends and spring begins. Spring hides inside winter. We notice it emerging with our eyes, our skin and other senses. We find it in new buds, a comfortable breeze and the warmth of the sun. It exists alongside winter.” And so, I started to work for Shuichi. I put my head down and tried to learn the job as fast as I could. But after a year, there was a traffic accident. Shuichi and his wife . . .’ There is no greater suffering than that of a parent who is unable to save their own child who wants to die.”Nevertheless, instead of being disgusted by his appearance, Shuichi looked genuinely pleased to have met him again. He invited Gohtaro into the cafe, and after hearing what happened, proposed: ‘Come and work at my diner.’ A question that defies rational thought but the answer of which lies in the hearts of those who are grieving for the people they have lost, regretting all that was left unsaid, those experiencing guilt over past actions or words that haunt them and prevent them from leading their lives to the fullest and those who want to see their loved one(s) just one more time.

Tales from the Cafe by Toshikazu Kawaguchi | Goodreads Tales from the Cafe by Toshikazu Kawaguchi | Goodreads

Toshikazu Kawaguchi’s original Before the Coffee Gets Cold, an adaptation of his own stage play, was one of the best-selling novels of 2019. A sweet, goofy, novel with heart to spare. Life in Japan on the strength of this novel seems even stranger than I had imagined, even after learning about Godzilla, apparently if you are working for a friend in their small business and they die, you can just take over the business, and raise their child as your own and nobody will complain or cause you any problems, not the law, the banks, or even any grandparents.Water flows from high places to low places. That is the nature of gravity. Emotions also seem to act according to gravity. When in the presence of someone with whom you have a bond, and to whom you have entrusted your feelings, it is hard to lie and get away with it. The truth just wants to come flowing out. This is especially the case when you are trying to hide your sadness or vulnerability. It is much easier to conceal sadness from a stranger, or from someone you don’t trust.” Working Within Limits in "Before the Coffee Gets Cold" – Chicago Review of Books". chireviewofbooks.com .
