The Dell Professional Sleeve 15 protects your 15" laptop wherever your busy day takes you. The Latitude 7490 finished our HandBrake video transcoding test (converting a 4K video to 1080p) in 21 minutes and 35 seconds, which is only slightly shorter than the 22:11 category average. The MateBook X Pro (27:18) took longer, and the ThinkPad T480 (18:09) took less time. The 8GB of DDR4 system memory and 256GB of storage is enough to run, but heavy users might find that storage gets somewhat snug after a few months use. Using the PCMark08 Work test, we ran the machine at maximum speed for 7 hours 51 minutes, and configured for longevity, the laptop managed an impressive 10 hours 51 minutes.

Dell used an Intel 545s M.2 SATA drive in the review hardware, and on paper, it looks fine. But in some of our writing tests, it didn’t perform that well, and the IOPS it delivers don’t compare favorably with those you’d get from a Corsair or Western Digital. Another strong point is the AU Optronics 14-inch IPS panel that’s a decent brightness and has a healthy color gamut. It also doesn’t use pulse-width modulation (PWM) to adjust brightness, with the negative impact that can have on eyesight.

The Latitude 7490 scored a high 14,458 on the Geekbench 4 general performance benchmark, which leaps over the 10,033 category average. We saw lower scores of 12,913 from the Huawei MateBook X Pro (Intel Core i7-8550U with 16GB of RAM), 12,047 from the Lenovo ThinkPad T480 (Intel Core i5-8350U with 8GB of RAM) and 13,463 from the HP EliteBook 1040 G4 (Intel Core i7-7820HQ with 16GB of RAM). In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 28.7 °C / 84 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.

There is so much to like in the Latitude 7490, despite it being a very derivative design from what came before. The new Intel silicon performs admirably, and this Dell machine has enough battery longevity so it won’t disappoint those who like to work on the move. An amazing display that lasts all day See the difference: An optional touch-enabled, high resolution display makes it simple to view and manage your work throughout the day.The panel’s response times are a bit on the slow side, but PWM is not used for brightness management. As a replacement for the previous 7480 models, the new 7490 looks much the same from the outside, but has had a complete overhaul internally.

The EliteBook 1040 G4 has a brighter display, but its keyboard is mediocre. But the Latitude 7490 begs consideration, as it's a business laptop that offers practically everything you need to be productive. While the 8 th-generation Intel CPUs all tend to experience an initial short burst of performance before subsiding somewhat, the Intel Core i7 in our previous 7490 review unit still distances itself from the Core i5-8350U in our CPU tests—ahead by some 9% and 15% in the Cinebench R15 multi- and single-core tests, respectively. After the first few runs, average multi-core scores are closer to the 530 mark in our tests—again, below the less-consistent but still quite a bit higher (roughly) 570 we received over the long-term from the Core i7 model. This means that the measured response time is worse than the average of all tested devices (21.8 ms).Once again, we come away from a Dell Latitude 7000 series machine thoroughly impressed. Along with Lenovo’s ThinkPads and HP’s EliteBooks, the Latitudes stand head and shoulders above the rest of the business competition. They’re thoughtfully designed, smartly updated, and carefully revised. While the 7490 remains a mere iterative update to the 7480 in every sense of the term, it truly leaves little to be desired. The case is sturdy, subdued, and attractive, the weight is manageable, the input devices are top-notch, performance is very good, battery life is lengthy, and it’s a quiet companion. The few areas of improvement we’d like to see are display options to match its competitors, improved thermal management, and better speakers.

That’s the other weakness of this design, but it shares this limitation with every Intel 8th-gen machine of whatever specification.New Intel Kaby Lake R processors have gone beyond what designers could previously imagine with a 15W budget, and the review model had an Intel Core i5-8350U quad-core 1.7GHz (Turbo 3.6GHz) processor under the hood, which is the equal of many desktop CPUs. Built with stunning resolution: The 14" FHD (1920x1080) display features an anti-glare embedded touch screen for reduced weight and remarkable viewing all day. Today’s Latitude 7490 retains the 1920x1080 resolution, but exchanges the embedded touch display of our previous unit with a conventional IPS, non-touch, matte panel. Subjectively, color seems vivid, contrast appears strong, and brightness is fairly good. Our measurements revealed an average brightness of 294 cd/m²—ever-so-slightly below that of the embedded touch model—and a very good contrast ratio of 1342:1. While the ThinkPad T480s and the EliteBook 840 G5 in our comparison table only achieve results slightly above these, the X1 Carbon absolutely blows them all away with an average brightness of 533 cd/m²—and the 840 G5 offers a superior FHD IPS display option with a mind-blowing 630 cd/m² result. While today’s screen is certainly nice enough, Dell should consider stepping up their options for the next model to stay in competition.
