About this deal

Asterios Polyp is his first graphic novel, and has won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and been listed as a New York Times notable book. This brazenly original and complex work is easily one of the year's best novels, graphic or otherwise.

I couldn't recommend it more highly, though; this and Fun Home are the most astonishing graphic novels--and among the most astonishing books of any kind--I've ever come across. Maybe I just found his self-absorbed personality too off-putting, but I didn't really feel any sympathy for him or care about his ideas about how the world works.

As ever, Mazzucchelli keeps both the visual and storytelling fireworks coming…This is a work that demands to be read, re-read, analyzed, and discussed.

Or to be clearer - I've been entering personal details into group conversations that can easily be interpreted as trying to funnel the spotlight of the narrative onto myself. You know, you have this almost completely unlikeable character, Asterios, who sees the world from a very logical perspective, very limited to Reason, enlightenment-based modernism.Você entenderá a história (ou não) e relendo pela segunda vez, você começará a perceber a metalinguagem utilizada, em como arte e quadrinho se mesclam e uma utiliza da outra para efeito narrativo. Asterios Polyp is a fast, fun read, but it’s also a work that has been carefully wrought to take optimum advantage of comics’ hybrid nature—it’s a tale that could only be told on the knife-edge where text and art come seamlessly together. Asterios Polyp is his first graphic novel, and has won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and been listed as a New York Times notable book. But what I loved the most is that this graphic novel has a living and breathing soul, a true soul that you can see much better in the second part.

In questa sorta di viaggio vediamo la ricerca interiore del protagonista attraverso i flashback dei momenti salienti della sua vita alternata allo svolgimento del suo presente. I see this as a love story, and - among many other things - a story about the communication challenges that we experience because of our differences. I don’t have the vocab or knowledge to comment on the artwork’s nuances, but the artist subtly conveys shifting moods, attitudes, histories, metaphors and so on with clever little flourishes and lovingly precise ATD. A book that uses formalism in a way that is pleasing to the eye, buoyed by a story and characters pleasing to the mind (though I guess the art pleases both). Ryder from Ishiguro's The Unconsoled, a man at the top of his rarefied field who still must learn to grow up.Reality, perception, and memory play a huge role in Mazzucchelli's work here even as they do in everything I've yet read by Ishiguro. Masterfully crafted, multi-dimensional characters and a simple, yet deep story make this graphic novel a small diamond of the genre.

Maravillosa la parte en la que en unas pocas páginas da un repaso a la vida cotidiana de Asterios con Hana, también ese descenso a los infiernos en modo Orfeo para recuperarla.

As the story unfolds, moving between the present and the past, we begin to understand this confounding yet fascinating character, and how he's gotten to where he is. We can all stop reading comics now, because David Mazzucchelli’s crafted the ultimate comic book statement. It's the presentation-- the use of narrative symbolism, color and visual metaphor--that truly sets the book apart. A simpler concept in theory than in execution, but Asterios Polyp shows exactly why it's worth thinking about. Mazzucchelli’s style – effortless and so versatile that you can’t imagine Asterios in any other medium—is sweeping in every sense.
