About this deal

Despite initial UK critical resistance you can see why British fans welcomed a Southport group who plainly loved the Grateful Dead, The Band, and Tom Waits and preferred English singers who had the good sense to impersonate Americans. Depeche Mode delivered an electrifying performance in Birmingham on January 24th, showcasing their musical prowess in a spectacular manner. Take a look at their streaming stats on Spotify, YouTube or any of those services; they're strong, but they're far from outstanding.

I’m not here to argue that that particular interval was an especially high-water mark in rock and roll. Although, many of the tunes came from the same process as the debut, Liquid Skin is a more ambitious, more eccentric, “less pop and less innocent” take on their blues-influenced sound. YouTube sets this cookie to measure bandwidth, determining whether the user gets the new or old player interface. A spell of techno emerges, neatly unfolding into a hazy psychedelic rock that soon finds itself in the growling electronica territory of Death In Vegas, the next second reaching its gentle, dreamy conclusion.A heavily fuzzed-out guitar adds a thick texture in the background as the band launch into another chorus. The first CD finds the original album accompanied by a selection of songs that have remained unreleased until now. Just that sense, maybe nostalgia is not the best way to frame it, coming from there in a way, but that it of people just getting together and having a good time when it is overwhelmingly positive. Because of this, Gomez were always hard to categorize, a fact that, despite their popularity, gave the UK press pause to go on the attack.

There's always been a lot of love for the band and that album in Australia, but the extent of the excitement was a little surprising. The “in-full” performances of the album come off the back of lavish reissue complete with 19 unreleased tracks, that dropped in July. While previously released demos from the 20-year special edition, "Nobody's Girl" and "Throwin' Myself Away" would have fit perfectly on Gomez's Liquid Skin, given a little spit and polish, "Someday" is something else entirely. His enormous vocal kicks in at the same time as the band – a mammoth sonic explosion – and it's all on for young and old.Gray described the song as being a dig at a lot of "landfill RnB in the late-90s, but we were also saying that we were dicks appropriating black culture".

Have the band been sitting on these for years to release later or are they tracks that should stay hidden? Originally released in 1999, the album reached number two in the UK album charts, following up their Mercury-winning debut Bring It On. They had to invite us to the ceremony, and we were like, ‘Sorry we are playing the Fillmore in San Francisco that night. Many of the tracks here were written during the recording of the debut, in fact, the lead single shares it's name with that first album but appears here instead. It ends with a raga rock coda; the song was written around the same time as "Tijuana Lady" (from Bring It On), though was abandoned and left off their debut. Described as a blues rock album, Liquid Skin was compared to the work of Beck, the Grateful Dead, and Pearl Jam. With songs like 'Step Inside', 'Flight' and 'Rosemary' left as b-sides, we can only imagine how much of a better album this could have been.
