Surprisingly, the village is covered in hair-like volcanic glass fibers, and all of it shines a bright gold. At night, when the villagers perform their custom of gazing up at the starry sky, countless unidentified flying objects come raining down on them—the opening act for the terror is about to occur. The Ghost of Golden Time, about two ghostly spirits trying to make it in stand-up comedy by making victims laugh to death.

You can’t talk about horror mangawithout mentioning Junji Ito. He’s a modern master. Since 1987, he’s been disturbing readers with short and long-form stories that blend several subgenres, such as psychological and body horror. This is an upcoming collection of nine stories adapted from author Hirokatsu Kihara, famed in Japan for his telling of urban legends. Junji Ito retells these tales in his unique style and perspective through the lens of university student Mimi and her boyfriend Naoto. Each story is a different encounter, which supposedly happened to someone in real life. Ito's work has developed a substantial cult following, [1] [2] and Ito has been called an iconic horror manga artist. [1] [3] [4] [5] His manga has been adapted to both film and anime television series, including the Tomie film series and both the Junji Ito Collection and Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre anime anthology series.

Nine short stories were presented by Junji Ito in this collection, including the aforementioned Greased title that was excluded from Smashed. No Longer Human was an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Osamu Dazai. The overall story was told in notebooks left by a troubled man by the name of Ōba Yōzō, who has been resentful of humanity since childhood. The manga version includes several of Junji Ito's horrific touches, which includes killing off more than a few people who survived in the novel. Tomiewas Junji Ito’s first major work, originally published in Japan between 1987 and 2000. In 1989, he won the Kazuo Umezu Prize. This collection was just- weird and gross and unique in the best ways. Everything I’ve come to expect from Ito and his mangas. The variety in the types horror he presents -especially in his short story collections- is fantastic. The most common obsessions are with beauty, long hair, and beautiful girls, especially in his Tomie and Flesh-Colored Horror comic collections. For example: A girl's hair rebels against being cut off and runs off with her head; Girls deliberately catch a disease that makes them beautiful but then murder each other; a woman treats her skin with lotion so she can take it off and look at her muscles, but the skin dissolves and she tries to steal her sister's skin, etc. Venus in the Blind Spot is a short story collection, which features new and previously published tales. The Hanging Balloons (2000), archived from the original on September 20, 2022 , retrieved September 20, 2022 The Face Burglar is a doppleganger-focused tale, with a student being able to assume people's faces unconsciously. The Devil's Logic focuses on suicide, peer pressure, and how sometimes death can come from unexpected places. Love as Scripted, meanwhile, focuses on a man who breaks up with his girlfriends via videotapes, and his current girlfriend killing him when she discovers this.As for the legacy that Ito has carved out for himself, it’s a rather colossal one. In interviews, Ito comes across as a mild-mannered, calm, charming, and sweet man who exists in remarkable contrast to the themes and content of his art and stories. Speaking of violations of propriety, I do still sometimes look at unauthorized translations. Not long ago, subtitles were release for the Junji Itō episode of Manben, an NHK television series hosted by the manga artist Naoki Urasawa, where small cameras are placed in a manga artist's studio as they work, and the resulting footage is matched with a process-oriented discussion between Urasawa and the artist. I'm unsure as to the likelihood of something like this appearing on western television or home video anytime soon. In his episode, Itō describes his work in terms of stewardship of horror manga traditions, drawn from the likes of Hino, Shin'ichi Koga, and his idol, Kazuo Umezu; Itō's goal is to create images that nobody has seen before, and bring them to life. This trilogy of novels is a compendium of shorter stories that wouldn't otherwise have fit into large volumes. They collect the shorter stories like Bio House, a story about a girl with a rather odd boss who specializes in biotechnology and turns out to be host to vampire maids. Another story collected is The Bully, practically the only Junji Ito penned story to avoid supernatural horror as it focuses on abuse. A collection of short stories which have no logic except dream logic (i.e. no logic) but a whole lot of eidetic disgusting body horror and very crazy zoned-out dialogue – I will give you a flavour

Marionette Mansion (from House of the Marionettes, あやつりの屋敷 Ayatsuri no Yashiki), a story about a family who rather than deciding what they do or how they live, they instead hire puppeteers to control their actions via strings from the attic of their home. Collects: Blood-Bubble Bushes, Unendurable Labyrinth, The Reanimator's Sword, The Will, The Bridge, The Devil's Logic, and The Conversation Room This is a collection of stories that centre around the central character of Tomie. She is a femme fatale who can seduce nearly any man and drive them to murder. With a mix of psychological horror and the supernatural, each story tells of her seducing a man and its aftermath. Shiver is a collection of short horror stories that really highlight why Junji Ito is considered to be a master of the horror genre. War is hell, and Deserter is no exception. Deserter is more of a collection in and of itself, with the titular story and several others being included in it. For the sake of duplicates, this entry will only focus on the titular story, as the others were included in Museum of Terror volume 3.
