About this deal

So, in short, I didn't feel that this book was up to par with his first essay collection, but it's worth reading just the same. With Farther Away he has down exactly as he mentions in his first essay and produced something genuine, rather than something marketable/likeable (although it is those things too). Coincidentally, I listened to this introduction while watching one of my sons' baseball game in a tiny, historic stadium in downtown Newport. His compulsive need to touch every last island and passage, to do it better than any other discoverer preceding him, to rename all those previously named islands so people would know they were the property of James Cook—it was all becoming exhausting.

However we do learn that the father is particularly aspiration and likes to look after his so n and protect him and show him the way.

Scuttled there during the American Revolution while Cook was commanding another vessel on the other side of the world, ENDEAVOUR still lies, silently, linking us to our past. This was not a fault of the author but because of how Cook himself had changed so much since Endeavour's voyage. We will continue our struggle( So we beat on) face all the hardships of reality, against everything life puts us through( boats against the current), only to end up close to where we started.

An easy to read explorer/adventure story with just the right level of detail for me - I learned lots of things about Cook that I didn't know (that I probably should've known, given the hero worship of him in NZ) but the story wasn't bogged down with excessive detail. Close inspection of the text and illustrations provides subtle links to World War One and ancient Greece, in particular the story of Icarus, as well as strong links to the DT curriculum. An excellent, fast paced read that would have definitely been rated 4 stars, had it not been for the lack of citations, bibliography, AND index.Strangely, when its fate was revealed, over a decade since its good service to Cook, I was quite moved to tears.

Farther Than Any Man is a fascinating exposé on the adventurer that would go on to be the inspiration for the character James T. He was an ambitious lower class farm boy who, with nothing but his wits, work ethic, courage, and excellent character, rose to become one of the most famous sailers of all time. But to be honest if I didn't switch to the audiobook version I don't know if I would have ever gotten through this book.

This book is absent of criteria on the national curriculum, therefore it would be great to use for the children to adapt the book with national curriculum points. A young boy, bewitched by his fathers unrelenting passion to fly; a desperate craving that absorbs his every waking minute, finds himself entranced by the dream.Books can be one way of becoming that impassioned, involved lover and critic of the world he describes in the first essay.
