About this deal

While Kano’s DIY touchscreen computer kit wasn’t exactly complicated to set up, the Harry Potter Coding Kit trumps it on simplicity — there are just four main parts that need to be assembled. Though anyone can learn from the kits, children represent a core target market for Kano. This is evidenced by Kano’s Harry Potter Coding Kit, which was announced earlier this year. VentureBeat managed to spend a little time with the kit, alongside a bona fide six-year-old, to see how she coped with the pressures of building a connected wand and then putting it to work in the fantasy world inhabited by Potter & Co. Setting up Inside the wand sits a slimline module incorporating the button and the LED along with a nine-axis accelerometer and gyroscope (for motion) and a magnetometer (for direction), allowing the app to sense the wand’s position and angle relative to your tablet or PC, and register any movements you make. It’s effective too, recognising when you’re trying to aim at something specific or pull off one of the app’s Hogwarts-inspired gestures. Kano helpfully bundles in a poster to help you master these, though the in-app help is pretty good as well. The wand leaves lots of room to grow as it can take you from beginner to more advanced coding concepts with more play If parents wanted a fun way to get their kids coding, Sphero’s robots and apps were easily the best way to go. Now, however, there’s a new option in the mix – and one that the Harry Potter tie-in is going to make irresistible. I’ve been working through it with my daughter, and while she has a bit of experience with Scratch and Sphero’s stuff behind her, she’s really taken to this, the Hogwarts theme and the challenge structure pulling her from one task to the next – and she’s actually taking things in and learning. The price is reasonable, and who doesn’t want to build their own Harry Potter wand? Verdict

Trying to explain what coding is to a six-year-old is a largely futile endeavor — in my experience, at least. But a main purpose of the Kano Harry Potter Wand is to teach the basics of coding to kids who may not realize that’s what they’re doing. GamesBeat Next's on-demand library is now live! Challenges

If you’re looking to encourage your kids to learn about programming, the Harry Potter Kano Coding Kit comes highly recommended. It might sound like a cliché, but the challenges actually do make learning fun, and your would-be code wizards should come away with a decent grasp of the principles of computing. According to Kano, you should get around six hours of continuous usage from the wand before you have to switch batteries. Verdict

That said, the LED is positioned at the lower end of the wand, and it’s so small and subtle that it’s hard to get all that excited about it. A slightly larger bulb positioned at the tip of the wand would have created a more engaging experience — but that would probably have had an adverse impact on battery life. Speaking of which … Battery It’s a little like the original Karate Kid movie. Mr. Miyagi persuaded Daniel LaRusso to paint fences and wax cars, and while Miyagi did enjoy some free domestic labor from the endeavors, LaRusso was simultaneously honing his karate skills without even realizing it.
