The issue of hidden disability is important because, although we have come a long way in recent years partly due to the success of the sunflower scheme, the idea that ‘real’ disability can be seen is still widespread. This means that members living and working with hidden impairments sometimes struggle to get their disability taken seriously by managers and others. non-visible’ physical health conditions, such as chronic pain, respiratory conditions, diabetes, incontinence Having a disability or a chronic health condition can be a life-changing event in one’s life. Going through this process can be made even more difficult by having to deal with a significant amount of stigma associated with disability. I have seen

While I was working on employment projects for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), I have seen employers ask for candidates with “mild disabilities”. People with mild disabilities as per their definition and expectations, do not look much different from people without any impairments. They should be able to handle the same level of work pressure and work load as any other employee. In other words, they are not ready to make any special accommodations for their PwD employees. There is another set of employers who would want to give opportunities only to people with “visible impairments”, so that those employees could become the marketing content for them. Both of these types of employers have flawed mindsets and dispositions about the concept of Diversity and Inclusion. This can make it difficult for people with non-visible disabilities to access what they need. The impact of living with a non-visible disability can be slight, or can have a huge effect on someone’s life. Why is it called a non-visible disability? Chronic pain, breathlessness, dizziness, chronic fatigue, hearing difficulties, anxiety and experiencing difficulties communicating or with concentration, memory and mood – all of these symptoms are invisible but that doesn’t make them any less real.

The majority of physical and mental health conditions as well as many learning, behavioural and developmental disabilities are therefore not visible or immediately obvious to others. Speech and language difficulties, reduced sight, chronic fatigue syndrome, colitis, autism, depression, migraine and asthma are just a few examples of hidden disabilities. There are many, many more.

Some people with disabilities that are not obvious prefer the phrase ‘non-visible’. This is because the word ‘invisible’ can erase the legitimacy of the disability, or imply the disability does not exist. Sensitivity is a wonderful investment, because recognizes the beauty of a diverse team. Creativity, different points of view, different skillsets—these things can all bring amazing talent to your business and truly contribute to its success. If your workplace only nurtures one type of wellness, then you're potentially missing out on a lot of beautiful people out there. AccommodationsThe improvements made to support people with non-visible disabilities are also likely to support those with visible disabilities. Our key event for Disability History Month 2023 is our virtual Disability Summit taking place on Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 November 2023. The theme for International Day of People with Disabilities 2020 is "Not all disabilities are visible". Part of my work as Minister for Disabled People is to promote further understanding of all types of disability. This aims to open up a discussion about disabilities which are not immediately obvious. This will help to spread awareness and reduce stigma around disabilities which cannot be easily ‘seen’. WHO. Disability and health [Internet]. Who.int. 2018.
