Adherent of the Abyss says: [Shath'Yar] I am FREE! I thank you... and now your souls shall sate my fathomless hunger. Antiges: Second-in-command and friend to Cestus for over 20 years. Killed in action whilst attempting to sabotage the Furious Abyss. The surviving World Eaters were led by both Skraal and the Ultramarine officer Antiges on a daring sabotage mission against the Furious Abyss — the destroyer of the Fist of Macragge and much of Cestus' investigatory fleet - whilst the Word Bearers' vessel had dropped anchor at Bakka Triumveron. [1e] Skraal alone survived this disastrous mission, a 'hidden guest' aboard the Word Bearers' ship. [1g] Avoiding all attempts to capture or kill him, Skraal also managed to resist being suborned by the words of the Word Bearer's commander, Zadkiel. [1h] Cestus was interested, to some degree, in the human experience, and enjoyed learning about the more unusual (to him) sides of life. This included an interest in the more esoteric studies, which partially explained his tolerance of Mhotep and his methods. He was disappointed that his gene-built appearance, even shorn of his armour and weapons, could unnerve or intimidate ordinary humans. He shared a strong friendship with Antiges, his immediate subordinate. This friendship was said to improve their battlefield performance, as their personalities mixed together to form balance - where Cestus was emotive but cautious, Antiges was impatient and aggressive. [1] Skraal was a Brother-Captain of the World Eaters Adeptus Astartes Legion who lived during the time of the Great Crusade and the beginning of the Horus Heresy. He is most notable for his participation in the hunt of the Furious Abyss, a campaign which saw him work in concert with Astartes of the Ultramarines, Thousand Sons and Space Wolves against the traitorous forces of the Word Bearers. [1x] HistorySkraal was able to survive alone and on the run inside the giant vessel for several weeks, until he was finally able to link up with his fellow loyalists some time later, in the wake of a second boarding action by forces under Cestus' command. [1k] During this last attempt to destroy the Furious Abyss, Skraal chose to sacrifice himself to buy Cestus and Brynngar Sturmdreng time. Cleaving his way through Zadkiel's personal guard, Skraal suffered many wounds and was finally stopped by a bolt-pistol shot from Zadkiel at close range. Before collapsing, Skraal was able to swing his chainaxe one last time, shearing through both Zadkiel's pistol and his hand. Zadkiel then stabbed the defiant World Eater through the head, killing him. [1l] Appearance and Abilities

Battle for the Abyss: The Horus Heresy, Book 8 (Audio

For a really fast relocating exercise novel the creator does a superb work of providing the major personalities sufficient depth, exposing some intriguing motivations in addition to decisions, to increase the story in addition to make it sturdy with out interfering with the pace. While I wouldn’t say that I hated Battle for the Abyss, it is not a good book. It suffers from major pacing issues and none of its characters help to carry an otherwise standard story of chasing a battleship. You could easily skip this book and not miss anything from The Horus Heresy, and I’d suggest you do just that. It doesn’t add anything or have anything to say beyond “Word Bearers bad, Ultramarines good”, which is about as boring a message as you can have for a Warhammer story. Zadkiel, a commander of the Word Bearers Legion, gives a speech to his massed followers at the launching of the Furious Abyss, a massive battleship constructed in secret by the Mechanicum on the little-known moon Thule. Shortly after the Word Bearers embark and the Abyss takes off, Thule is destroyed to keep the ship's construction secret.

The characters themselves are fine. There’s an interesting side plot about the Space Wolf, Brynngar, having a confrontation with the Thousand Son, Mhotep, about his use of the Warp. However, this culminates in a way to remove Brynngar’s agency from the equation and mean that it also felt pointless. It’s not resolved in a meaningful way and only really serves to inject some artificial tension and separate Mhotep from the rest of the Space Marines. The sort of standout here is the World Eater, Skraal, who spends most of his time trapped on the Word Bearer’s ship, the Furious Abyss, doing what World Eaters do best, killing folk. He’s enjoyable for his single-minded, behind enemy lines almost Rambo-esque side plot. However, he’s never really developed and the story spends hardly any time exploring his adventures onboard the Abyss, so it felt aimless at best. Our main man Cestus, the Ultramarine, is fine. He’s your standard Ultramarine and never develops beyond that. Image Credit: Michael SykesOnce you've collected all the fragments, combine them at the Altar of the Abyss to create the Abhorrent Essence of the Abyss. The altar is found at the end of a cave hidden behind a waterfall in Stormsong Valley. Nazjatar Blood Serpent is a Secret Mount added in Battle for Azeroth. This serpent is a red recolor of the Riddler's Mind-Worm Secret Mount from Legion. The Adherent of the Abyss might be hard to solo for undergeared characters in Battle for Azeroth, so make sure to bring a friend to help out.
