About this deal

The "DC" in the name indicates that this lens provides an image circle wide enough to cover (only) an APS-C imaging sensor, and the "DN" indicates that this lens was designed for short flange mirrorless cameras. I'm in the position of owning the Oly 17 and the PanaLeica 25 f1.4, so there isn't a really compelling reason for me to acquire this.

Sigma 16 mm f/1.4 (C) AF DC DN Lens for Canon EF-M X Mount

The linking to samples of what you're talking about is useful, as is the talk of existing alternatives.Terrible focus by wire pun tho, just terrible. ;P I'd probably have added, even if obvious, that the PL15 is even closer to a 28mm equivalent... As we’ve seen with an increasing number of Sigma’s Global Vision lenses for Canon DSLRs, this new M-mount lens is preloaded with data for enabling in-camera corrections for aberrations like peripheral illumination, chromatic aberration and diffraction, where featured in the host camera. Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN | C: Performance Image quality is similarly great to that already mentioned here with the Fujifilm version. Images display excellent sharpness, fantastic detail and a lovely drop off in focus thanks to the very wide aperture. I’d highly recommend the lens for Nikon Z mount DX users, and even potentially full-frame users too looking for a fast, 24mm lens at a good price. Amy Davies. Sigma 16mm F1.4 DC DN C Verdict The Sigma 16mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens has an aesthetically pleasing design that maintains tight tolerances and has a quality finish.Extension tubes are hollow lens barrels that shift a lens farther from the camera, allowing shorter focusing distances at the expense of long-distance focusing. Perhaps obviously, the biggest advantage that this Sigma offers is the incredibly bright F1.4 aperture.

For those of us who work in full-frame angles of view, this lens provides a 24mm (Sony 1.5x field of view crop factor calculation) full-frame angle of view equivalent. Although beauty is always subjective, I find this lens to have a nice but, to be frank, somewhat boring aesthetic (and that’s ok!). A full extent focus distance change requires over four full rotations (1680°) when turning the focus ring slowly. The most important function of an AF system is accuracy, and seldom is AF accuracy an issue with mirrorless cameras. When I shot a similar scene on the a6500/Sigma 16mm and then the new a7RIII/Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS lens (at f/5.6) and then downsampled the a7RIII image to equivalent resolution with the a6500 (which favors the a7RIII result), I found that the Sigma 16mm DN still delivered the better image. Less vignette along the edges, better sharpness near the edges, and slightly more contrast. This is a very sharp lens, with few competitors in the Sony system.I did notice some purple fringing in certain high contrast scenes at wide apertures. The nature of this is covered in the resolution section above. It is essentially only an issue at f/1.4. I’ll toss a few wide “macro-ish” shots below. I’m not a macro photographer by any means, but I thought these turned out nice especially considering they were shot on an ultra-wide. Astrophotography So yeah, I really do think the Sigma 16mm F1.4is quite literally the best value wide angle lens for Sony APS-C cameras. The 16mm F1.4 acts as a 32mm equivalent lens on the Micro Four Thirds platform. It's an interesting focal length to end up with: not quite 28mm equiv., which many people would consider the gateway to wide-angle, but also noticeably wider than the near-normal of 35mm equiv. I didn't expect it to make any difference but found myself constantly fighting against too much stuff creeping into the edges of the frame in a way that I don't with a 35mm. In general, the more a lens diaphragm is stopped down, the larger and better-shaped the sunstars tend to be.

Otherwise, using the lens with a Nikon camera is pretty much identical in experience to using it with one of the other mounts. Focusing is fast, accurate and quiet, making it well-suited to a range of different subjects. Optionally use ISO 50 if your camera provides this setting, though the dynamic range may be impacted. All in all there is a lot to like and little to criticize here. It’s a nicely made lens that has a premium look and feel to it. At short focus distances, the f/1.4 aperture enables a fairly tight depth of field, with good smoothness in defocused areas (Image credit: Matthew Richards) While the 16mm focal length and f/1.4 aperture are highly suited for night sky photography, this lens's rendering of peripheral stars is not.It starts out with the 16mm f1.4’s sharpness, which is outstanding by the way. The photos come out just so crisp and with such nice depth. Center sharpness at f1.4 is excellent with the edges holding up quite well. As you stop it down, sharpness overall improves, especially the edges. The 16mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary lens simply captures every little detail. However, if you are after the absolute maximum sharpness from this lens, I would say shoot around f5.6. to f8. Still, don’t be afraid to use this lens throughout its aperture range because it will give you superb results at pretty much any setting. The optics are just so good. A small prime lens with a 35mm focal length is generally regarded as being perfect for street photography, at least on a full-frame camera. This EF-M 22mm brings the same benefits to APS-C format shooting on an EOS M camera. Its ‘pancake’ design enables it to be incredibly small, so you can be as inconspicuous as possible when shooting. Candid photography also benefits from the virtually silent stepping motor autofocus system.
