About this deal

Cannot say enough good things about this apartment. Within sight of the city walls and five minutes walk to the centre, it offered easy access to all the delights York has to offer without ever moving the car. Our hosts were charming and welcoming, meeting us on our arrival and explaining everything we needed to know. Very concise written information about the apartment and the city was available in the apartment. The apartment itself was very well appointed; modern, bright and warm, extremely comfortable bed, smart TV and extra TV in the bedroom, dvd player, dishwasher, washing machine, internet access and lots more. Lots of lovely little touches, flowers and plants, rugs and cushions made it feel like home from home. Thank you again Melanie and David for making our stay so enjoyable. We shall certainly be returning.” My father and I had a very enjoyable few days in York. The apartment was excellent and suited our needs perfectly. Thank you for hosting us, will recommend.”

Our first trip to York has been a delight and no small part due to the accommodation you have provided. The thought and care you have taken to design and furnish this apartment were evident. It was easy to feel at home. Thank you!” Visitors will experience conservation first-hand, learning about the people and techniques which protect heritage for future generations and we will open the Cathedral Workshop to wider uses, including tours and training. Monks’ lives are often difficult, and they are little understood by the rest of society. Why do they persist in their anachronistic lifestyle and practices? How would you answer the author’s question: “ Are monks wasting their time in seeking to convert themselves, and the world, from evil?” (p. 128) How did the book change your understanding of the monastic life? Did it inspire you to pursue these ideas further? Our second visit to this lovely apartment. So central yet lovely and quiet. Nice Christmas additions from the owners and info on things happening in York during our stay. No need now to look for somewhere else to stay when in York as no. 10 just perfect!” Faithworks, http:// www.faithworks.com/ (September 26, 2001), Al Hsu, review of The Virgin of Bennington.Definitely the highest spec accommodation I have stayed at in York. For this central location this flat is amazingly peaceful with a comfortable bed means there was the best possible chance of a good nights sleep. Degree of survival: the friary church is substantially intact and three ranges of the cloister retain a substantial proportion of medieval fabric; We have had the most wonderful stay in this very comfortable and lovely apartment. Thank you so much Melanie and David for thinking of everything. We are very much looking forward to our return visit next month.” Pevsner, N, Wilson, B, The Buildings of England: Norfolk: 1 Norwich and North-East, (2002), 265-269

This reading group guide has been created to enhance your group’s enjoyment of The Cloister Walk, which can be read as a chronicle of spiritual discovery or as a meditation, like daily passages of scripture. We hope it will prove to be a valuable accompaniment to Kathleen Norris’s unique work —“a gift of insight… one of those rare books too rich to race through” ( The Kansas City Star). What a delightful apartment and lovely welcome. The cake was delicious. The proximity to all York as to offer which made our stay unforgettable. We will hight recommend your apartment to others.” New York Times Book Review, May 5, 1996, p. 12; April 5, 1998, Michael Milburn, review of Amazing Grace: A Vocabulary of Faith, p. 19; May 31, 1998, review of Amazing Grace: A Vocabulary of Faith, p. 24; December 6, 1998, review of Amazing Grace: A Vocabulary of Faith, p. 75; April 25, 1999, review of Amazing Grace: A Vocabulary of Faith, p. 32; May 27, 2001, Erica Goode, review of The Virgin of Bennington, p. 10. The cross passage (or ‘walking place’) between the two halls now forms a foyer containing a reception desk and wheelchair lift, with a late C20 bar in a partitioned space beneath the east arch of St Andrew’s Hall. There is a mid-C19 partition containing pointed arches and blind tracery set into the arch. A C18 memorial stone is mounted on the east wall and there is a C15 four-centred arched doorway leading to a stair turret in the north-east corner. The east elevation of the south range has two lancet windows to the first floor. It is adjoined at the south-east by The Crypt; a two bay rectangular building. The south range has a slate covered roof whilst The Crypt has a flat felt roof.Have stayed in York many times in hotels and apartments, this is the best apartment we have used. Lovely apartment in a fantastic location with secure parking. A warm welcome from Melanie. Thank you for the homemade scones and all the other lovely personal touches.
