To remove a wart, a dermatologist might use cryosurgery, or cryotherapy. This involves briefly applying liquid nitrogen to the skin. The healing period is about 1 week, and complications are rare, though they can occur. The most commonly used treatments for warts and verrucas are acid, which burns the dead skin and infection away, and cryotherapy, which freezes them.

Current guidelines recommend having two cryosurgery sessions for wart removal, but more may be necessary, depending on the size of the wart. If treatment has not worked or you have a wart on your face, the GP might refer you to a skin specialist (dermatologist). Verrucas are more likely to need treatment because they often make walking painful: the verruca is pressed into the sensitive flesh of your foot when you stand or walk. Warts are small rough lumps on the skin. They are caused by a virus (human papillomavirus) which causes a reaction in the skin. Warts can occur anywhere on the body but occur most commonly on hands and feet. They range in size from 1 mm to over 1 cm. Sometimes only one or two warts develop. Sometimes several occur in the same area of skin. The shape and size of warts vary and they are sometimes classed by how they look. Examples are:Within 24 hours of the procedure, a blister forms around the wart. After about 1 week, it may be possible to remove this blister along with the wart. Verruca needling is done under local anaesthetic so the procedure doesn't hurt. Most people don't experience much pain afterwards. It is important to avoid anti-inflammatory painkillers for at least 48 hours following treatment, as there is a small chance they can reduce your immune system's ability to fight off the virus. Cryotherapy is a simple and relatively safe procedure, however, it can require several treatments to work. The resultant pain can also hinder compliance. Next assemble the applicator, so it’s ready for freezing. To charge, steady the device on a flat surface then press down firmly on the safety cap for 1 second. Hold the activator cap down on the surface with one hand and remove the device with the other, taking care not to overturn the cap. If the wart is a really stubborn one, there’s enough solution here for up to 12 applications, although you should only use it a maximum of three times (two weeks apart) on one wart.
