About this deal

When Shardlake is summoned to Court, he meets with Queen Catherine (Parr) and discovers a new case on which to work. Matthew has taken on a case as a favour to the Queen (Catherine Parr) to look into a case involving a ward of the courts and despite the country being on the brink of invasion must travel south to Hampshire to investigate. Too soft-hearted to dash her hopes, Shardlake hopes to find Ellen’s family and help them better arrange for her needs and care, but it soon becomes clear that Ellen’s situation is far more complicated than he realized. I did not like Richard Rich in the previous novels, but the way Sansom portrayed him in this one made my skin crawl and now I loath him.

Most of Sansom’s novels (which include Dissolution, Sovereign, Dark Fire and Revelation) seem positively operatic in their sheer scale, and the vividness of which Tudor England is covered by the author makes most other writing in the genre seem footling. But still, these books are wonderful in terms of historical detail, and make the era come to life really remarkably. Barak's character has evolved and aged, and we see he and Tamasin preparing for the birth of their second child after the loss of their first in Revelation. Likewise, since Shardlake finds himself embroiled in several mysteries, there are lots of dramatic and suspenseful dialogue exchanges too. Sadly there is only one more book for me to read and then the prospect of a long wait for the next one.

I had myself witnessed the wild, screaming panic that came over her if she were made even to step over the threshold.Though he is settling into married life, Barak still has his fighting spirit that leads him into trouble at times. The twist, when it comes, after what is an age and then some, is good and the story then shifts into at least a moderate gear.
