About this deal

Vehan turned to stare at her, mildly incredulous. Nausicaä, meanwhile, could hardly contain her laughter. “Okay, folks, if we come across anyone, make sure to also ask for directions to the nearest bathroom on top of whether they’ve been murdering children to make philosopher’s stones and kidnapping people and why.” I’m sure it hasn’t escaped your omniscience that her mother is niece to my father, the High King? Arlo is human. She is also fae.” While the Seelie Court's base is in Nevada—run by their *only* Queen Riadne, the Unseelie Court are the ones who have true power, living in good ol' Toronto, with their High King Azurean. Councillor Chandra rose from her seat, displeasure etched into her stunning sand-brown face at the thinly veiled accusation in Celadon’s statement. “Weighing the worth of an ironborn child is no trivial matter, Your Highness.” A Dazzling sequel with enough tantalizing court intrigue, reveals, and secrets to keep you on the edge of your seat. Shuttleworth expertly expands the beautiful and cruel world of the fae with rich worldbuilding and intricate character work in this must-read follow up to A Dark and Hollow Star.” ~ Liselle Sambury, author of BLOOD LIKE MAGIC

Celadon allowed silence to infuse the room a moment longer than what was comfortable for anyone. Even Arlo shifted at his side, her heart beginning again to flutter in panic. Hero, a twenty-eight-year-old ironborn, was working at NevaLife Pharmaceutical when he was sought out by a Hunter, due to his tendency to do experiments. At first, he was very nervous, but Lethe calmed him, taking him into his employment, and making him remember. This quartet all have plenty of their own problems – and most of their stories don’t even intersect in any real way for at least the first half of the novel. But the thoughtful, deft way they all come together is both entertaining and natural, and you’ll find yourself rooting for all of them by the end. A Dark and Hollow Star: Complex plotting and worldbuilding In this world, Fae and faeries also live in the human world, while of course, not allowing the humans to discover that magical creatures do in fact exist. (glamour is truly amazing😌) Councillor Sylvain shot up from his seat, a blue flush bleeding through his glamour to heat his face. “High Prince Celadon!” The Councillor’s words were more like thunder. As you know,” Celadon continued, “we base the ironborn Maturity timeline on the human standards of puberty. It’s expected that their magic will develop before the age of eighteen, but that isn’t the way for the folk, is it? That isn’t the way for fae, many of whom can only play around with bursts of breezes or electric sparks or puffs of flame before our own coming-of-age, which can happen any time between eighteen and twenty-five.” There was a fine and fragile line between the things that made a person brave and the things that made them fools - so far, she had a sinking suspicion their plan belonged to the latter category.”

Celadon kept Arlo’s wrist in his grasp but angled around once again to face the stands. “Councillor Sylvain,” he returned, the reply spoken light as air, yet somehow just as gravid as the mood of the room. Writing a multi-POV story can be difficult: It needs to feature distinct voices, with characters that are both distinctly drawn and who have arcs of their own. When done poorly, it’s painful. When done right, it’s propulsive, drawing readers deeper into the story in an attempt to connect the dots between a group of seemingly disparate stories. And thankfully, A Dark and Hollow Stardefinitely falls into that latter category. I was left guessing who the killer behind the murders was throughout the novel, along with following the clues Shuttleworth kept leaving in each of the characters’ points of view. It wasn’t until all four teens met up that the puzzle pieces fell into place at the climax of the novel. I enjoyed figuring out the motive and who was really behind these murders, as there were false leads throughout. I really enjoyed this book and the various fandom connections made throughout, such as to Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and towards the end of the novel, Dungeons and Dragons.A gripping flight into fantasy that is heavy-handed in its presentation of conventional beauty standards. For all that the High Prince delighted in ruffling the feathers of aristocracy, there wasn’t anyone she knew who could turn more heads. You have, as our law dictates, a choice: You may submit to your human heritage and surrender your knowledge of the Courts’ existence. Should you wish it, however, your sufficient inheritance of magic affords you the option of keeping this knowledge and retaining your citizenship in the UnSeelie Court of Spring. Your fae status will not be recognized, but you will be permitted a place in the magical community.”

A Dark and Hollow Staris now available. Let us know if you’ll be adding this fantasy to your TBR pile! The world-building was excellent, I loved the courts and their different locations, I loved the magic for those not fully of the fae realms and the differing levels between the ‘fae’ themselves and other beings. We have a great mix-up of everything and not to mention the world-building is basically attempting to rewrite itself in the plot and holy cow did I love that.

A Cruel and Fated Light by Ashley Shuttleworth | Goodreads A Cruel and Fated Light by Ashley Shuttleworth | Goodreads

I don't mean to hype this book too much because the hype can sometimes kill a book BUT SERIOUSLY I LOVE THIS SO MUCH I WOULD DIE FOR THESE GUYS😭 which I definitely was not expecting going into this.Nausicaä dealing with the loss of her sister was amazing to me. To present such a notion in a fantasy story isn’t new but to a immortal? Now that’s interesting. The idea that someone who is ever eternal suffers from such a mundane thing is unthinkable but not unpleasable but its not surprising. Your review is so beautifully written. It’s one of my favorite books of the year and can’t recommend it enough. Unnecessary, many in the faerie community whispering behind their hands, and Arlo had to agree. The High King cares more about rooting out the Assistance than he cares about finding who’s killing his folk… This immortal, sassy, snarky lesbian has stolen my heart. I would take a bullet for her and then ask her to autograph it. When rumblings of the murders started, the Courts insisted that the victims were human, not ironborn, and therefore not their concern. But when it became clear that the dead had, in fact, been ironborn and the Courts still did nothing, tensions between the ironborn, faerie, and fae communities grew to an all-time high. This was such a FUN read, fae, ya fantasy, mystery, gay as all get out and with possible formation of my new fave squad.
