The competition is organised by Cuprinol, a brand of wood stain and paint, and the winners receive a cash prize and Cuprinol products to enhance their sheds.

With a promise of 6 year weather protection on wooden surfaces, this water based paint takes approximately 8 hours to dry and covers up to 12m² per litre on average. Easily applied with a brush, roller or sprayer, this beautifully designed paint is available in 2 sizes including Cuprinol Garden Shades 1L and Cuprinol Garden Shades 2.5L. For optimum results, a maximum of 2 coats is generally required. Stir thoroughly before pouring contents into a Cuprinol sprayer. Overspraying surrounding areas can be minimized by avoiding spraying in windy conditions and by using cardboard or plastic as a shield. Any overspray should be cleaned up immediately (whilst still wet) with water and household detergent.

This is the original variety introduced from Sicily in 1699 by the monk, Francis Cupani, very closely related to the wild strain found growing in Southern Italy. A plant that everyone should grow in their garden, it is a robust, fully hardy strain, producing over many weeks gorgeous, bicolored, purple and rich deep purple-magenta flowers. Before you begin, make sure that you always stir the product thoroughly before emptying the contents into the sprayer and refer to the sprayer instructions for full instructions before every use. Before you begin, ensure that any nearby areas have been covered encase overspray occurs. Any overspray that may occur should be cleaned up immediately with water and household detergent. Reseal can after use. Clean up spills while still wet. After use, remove as much product as possible from brushes before cleaning with water. Do not store or use in extremes of temperature and protect from frost.Before full application of Cuprinol Garden Shades, we always recommend testing a small area first, before beginning any project to ensure that you are happy with the colour and overall look of the finish. Last year's competition winner was Kelly who won the top prize in the "Budget" category of the Cuprinol Shed of the Year competition, becoming the first overall winner in the category's 16-year history. She built her shed using unwanted items like old doors, pallet wood, and recycled materials she found on Facebook Marketplace and around her house. As Garden Shades often goes on directly to the wood, without a primer, sometimes it will soak deep into the wood and this can create the need for a third coat. This may be noticeable with rougher woods, open end grains or indeed deep colours. If wood has been exposed and dried out for a long period of time, this may also draw the more of the product away from the surface and into the wood structure.

Its special pigments ensure a rich colour and allow the natural texture of the wood grain to shine through. MINIMUM OF 2 COATS REQUIRED. SUBSEQUENT COATS MUST BE APPLIED ON THE SAME DAY NO LONGER THAN 8 HOURS APART. IF NOT POSSIBLE, LIGHTLY SAND DOWN SURFACES BEFORE RECOAT TO ENSURE ADHESION. Be mindful that it is waxed-enriched and that once these waxes are dried, they act to repel liquids, which would include an additional coats. Don't try to coat the whole project with one coat before getting onto the next coat. Instead it is better to paint sections in in time chunks of 2-4 hours. Untreated wood: should be pre-treated prior to adhesion test with an appropriate wood preserver to prevent rot and decay. Paint colours

Test a small area first for colour and adhesion: Colour the final colour will depend upon the type of surface, previous treatment and number of coats applied. If using more than one can it is advisable to mix them together in a container or finish in a corner before starting a new can. Adhesion: if adhesion is inadequate on previously coated surfaces, lightly sand before application. Apply in dry conditions, above 5 degrees Celsius and when bad weather is not forecast, minimum of 2 coats required. The final colour will vary depending on the surface and number of coats. If adhesion is inadequate on previous coatings, lightly sand before application. Make sure wood has been pre treated with appropriate wood preserver to prevent wood and decay.
