It can reduce emissions by up to 80% in diesel engines. Car manufacturers have to meet certain standards regarding emissions, and an EU directive issued in September 2014 made Adblue® tanks a legal requirement on all new diesel cars. Given that the additives I’ve been using are not performance boosters as such, I wasn’t expecting to feel any noticeable differences to my car’s accelerative qualities. If that was the point, Redex has products like its Petrol Power Booster. Alternatively, I could just fill my tank with premium unleaded fuel, which has a higher octane level than regular unleaded and provides extra power.

Depending on the layout of your car’s engine, Adblue® may be quite difficult to top up and refill, with the tank often located in a hard-to-reach area of the car. When your car’s AdBlue level starts to run low it will alert you prior to starting the engine, usually indicating how many miles of driving is remaining. It’s important that you don’t ignore this, as once it runs out it will not be possible to start the engine until the system is refilled. Don't start the engine; call your dealer or breakdown service provider to get the tank drained. If you start the engine, you could damage the selective catalytic reduction and AdBlue injection systems and they may then have to be replaced. What should I do if I put AdBlue in the diesel tank? If your car has a warranty, it is important to use branded AdBlue solution. For any solution to use this trademark, it must comply with certain standards that vehicle manufacturers’ SCR systems rely on. Failing to do so could invalidate the warranty. What happens if your car runs out of AdBlue?It’s important not to start the engine or you risk writing off the engine and fuel system. Call a breakdown company or misfuelling service provider and get the car’s fuel tank emptied and flushed out.

Also, if your tank is larger or smaller than 50 litres you can still use the recommended dosage with same level of performance being achieved. Whilst most AdBlue mixes are made up of the same quantities of urea (32.5%) and de-ionised water (67.5%), you may find some solutions called something different, BlueTech or Bluedef, or simply “urea solution”. You'll find you need to top up the Adblue tank about every 4000 - 5000 miles. The MMI will tell you you're getting low about 1500 miles before it runs out so you get ample warning, but don't leave it as when it runs out the car stops. The cheapest source of Adblue found so far is Morrisons but you can get it at Halfords, most garages and petrol station forecourts and some even have Adblue filling facilities. As a last resort an Audi (or indeed any) main dealer will fill it for you but it's one **** of an expensive option.

The Adblue® system is by far the easiest way to top up your car’s Adblue® tank and is guaranteed to work in any type of diesel engine. Over about 2,000 miles of mainly commuting in three months, my average fuel consumption using the Redex fuel system cleaners was 31.1mpg. My driving circumstances in that time have been a pretty representative example of my usual activities, so superficially it looks like a 1mpg improvement since using Redex.
