What happened to Angela that fateful night? How did she become the Sweetbay Strangler's first victim? That is just one of the questions eventually answered by the story. There really ended up being so much more going on here than I initially anticipated. Jar of Hearts was an engrossing tale of love, obsession, jealousy and murder. But fourteen years later, Angela Wong's remains are discovered in the woods near Geo's childhood home. And Kaiser—now a detective with Seattle PD—finally learns the truth: Angela was a victim of Calvin James. The same Calvin James who murdered at least three other women. Who’s your support system? the counselor asks. When Geo doesn’t answer, she rephrases. Who’ll be visiting you in here? Who are you looking forward to seeing when you get out? Because that day will come, and you should be thinking about those people every day that you’re in here. It’ll keep you focused. She suspected the majority of the executive team at Shipp hated that photo, that she was the one chosen to represent them, though nobody ever said so to her face.

Calvin asked Georgina to leave but she knew that they will kill one another once she does. Calvin implied that she should go, that people like him and Dominic should not exist. She stared at her son and Calvin, and she knew they were both irredeemable. They have become monsters who can no longer be pardoned. That hurt people will continue to hurt others. She knew what she had to do. She got the gun she had long been hiding under her pillow and fired twice. One aimed at her son and one at Calvin. Geo took her son in her arms and cradled him. She sees Calvin twitch then fires another one at his head. It’s not a bad thing, the counselor says, in an attempt to reassure her. The name plate on the desk says P. MARTIN. There are more guards in maximum. Minimum comes with privileges, but maximum comes with protection.

Geo shakes her head. “I never watched the news. I’d heard a little something about it from my father, since he still lives in Sweetbay, but I never made the connection. I suppose I wasn’t paying attention.” Kaiser holds up the bag. “It is for you. And you can have it … so long as you tell me what Calvin James slipped you in court.” Geo knew for 14 years what happened to Angela and told no one. She kept that secret. Kaiser Brody is the detective, and He was also one of Geo's friends in highschool. Geo is sentenced to prison for five years and Calvin is sentenced for life. Jar of Hearts is a riveting story that you won’t be able to put down. Just when you think you know what is going to happen, Jennifer Hillier takes you further into this dark web of lies and secrecy she’s created. “There’s a hero and a villain and sometimes they are the same person.” This statement has never rang more true in a murder mystery/thriller setting. You may think you have all the answers but you don’t!

About Jennifer

It's not often that a mystery features such a fresh plot. Jennifer Hillier's thrilling, and quite terrifying, Jar of Hearts is definitely not something you've read before...The answers will surprise even the most hardened thriller readers." — Cleveland Plain Dealer

The prosecutor has no further questions. The judge calls a recess for lunch. The jurors file out, and the spectators in the courtroom stand up and stretch. Phone calls are made. Reporters type furiously into laptops. The bailiff helps Geo out of the witness box, and she walks slowly past the defense table where Calvin is seated. He rises and grabs her hand as she passes, stopping her momentarily. So what are you doing here? she asks a few minutes later, when she’s eaten half her burger and her stomach has stopped hurting. Enter Calvin James. He’s 21, drives a red Trans Am, is too handsome for words, confident and charming to boot. When he takes a sudden, inexplicable and obsessive interest in Geo instead of Angela, Geo’s carefully constructed life slowly starts to unravel. Until one fateful night Calvin murders Angela Wong and Geo helps him cover it up. So what are you doing here?” she asks a few minutes later, when she’s eaten half her burger and her stomach has stopped hurting. She says nothing, because there’s nothing to say, not with everyone around watching them, listening. She extracts her hand. The bailiff nudges her forward.

The story starts at the court room, Georgina Shaw, successful business woman, rising star of Seattle pharmaceutical company sentenced to 5 years prison time because as her ex- boyfriend cut her best friend Angela into pieces and buried her into the ground 14 years ago, she didn’t do something to stop him and she didn’t tell anyone what she’d seen. And guess what! Kaiser Brody who was one of her best friend and always had a crush on her was the police officer put her behind the bars. But wait a second, her ex-boyfriend/ convicted serial killer Calvin gives a note says “You’re welcome with a heart drawing” after the trial. So what is going on? What is she hiding? Could she be the real killer or was she protecting someone? He stops. Makes a show of looking right at Geo, and then at Calvin, and then at the jurors. When he speaks again, his voice is a few decibels above a whisper, so that everyone in the courtroom has to strain to hear him. “You left your best friend buried in the woods, a mere hundred yards from the house you lived in, after your boyfriend cut her up into pieces.”

The story is cut into sections, beginning with Georgina (known as Geo to friends) at her trial where she is sentenced to five years in prison for her role in disposing of the body of her best friend, queen-bee cheerleader Angela Wong. Fifteen years after her disappearance from a party, her dismembered remains are found in a shallow grave in the woods not far from her house in Sweetbay, the fictional idyllic Pacific northwest suburb that Hillier has used in earlier novels (fans of her work will catch cameos in the police procedural sections that come later). Despite being younger than dashing young killer Calvin, and obviously under his power, she is punished for never telling the police of that awful night. Not only did The Sweetbay Strangler have two more victims, she left the Wong family tortured with the hope that their daughter might be alive. And worse yet, she reinvented herself as a young, high-powered executive who becomes engaged to the scion of a chemical empire. Not bad for the high school queen bee’s doormat friend but unforgivable in a tightly knit suburb where she—a mixed-race transplant—should express gratitude that she was “welcomed” into the town and Angela Wong’s inner circle. Especially last quarter of the book is the craziest train ride I’ve ever had for a long time which made me keep repeating: “WTF? WTF? WTF? WTF? WTF? WTF? WTF? WTF? WTF? WTF? WTF?!!!!!!!!!!” The prosecutor continues to ask questions, painting a picture for the jury of Angela Wong through Geo’s eyes. She continues to answer them, not adding any more detail than is necessary. Her voice carries through the small courtroom speakers, and she sounds calmer than she feels. Her profound sadness—which she’s carried with her every day of her life since Angela’s murder—seems diluted in her quest to speak clearly and articulately.Throughout High School, Georgina (Geo) Shaw, Angela Wong, and Kaiser Brody were best friends. They were practically inseparable… until the day Calvin James entered their lives. From then on nothing was the same…. Austrian single certifications – Christina Perri – Jar of Hearts" (in German). He replaces the bun and takes a large bite of his own. “You signed your plea agreement, nobody cares if I talk to you.”
