About this deal

In 1968, Rantzen, at the time a researcher for Braden's Week, became a presenter for the show, then a few years later the BBC replaced Braden's Week with That's Life! with Rantzen as the main presenter. That's Life! ran on BBC1 for 21 years becoming one of the most popular shows on British television. We may not all achieve what Dame Esther has, but here we can soak up her wisdom, laugh with her, learn from her, embrace the passing years and march boldly on. Read more Details Wilcox and Rantzen had three children, Miriam, Rebecca and Joshua. Rebecca followed in her parents footsteps and became a television presenter for the BBC's Watchdog programme. So many older people ringing the Silver Line have told me that it’s been years since they had fun. If I were Prime Minister, I’d bring in a law that everyone must have fun at least once a day. I have loads of fun. My children and grandchildren invariably make me laugh.

I recognise how much I owe to being Jewish. The closeness of my family, the priority of education, the culture we share as Jews are the basis of so many of my values. And I have found that it’s very important to be a member of a minority, and to recognise how much the tolerant majority has given me, in terms of opportunities and experiences. We Jews need to pass on the same tolerance and opportunities to other minorities, don’t we? I have an observant daughter and she constantly keeps me in touch with the High Holy Days, but I have become agnostic myself over the years. The fun of it. Hearing children laugh is irresistible, hence the joy of playing games such as drawing consequences. And treasure hunts. And story-telling. And the unexpected cuddle. Nothing can be nicer or more precious. My beloved sister has flown from Australia to be with me for the most crucial hospital appointments. She’s quite stern with me when I don’t want to eat, or go for a walk down the lane. My children and grandchildren are a huge pleasure. If you're coming to Coles by car, why not take advantage of the 2 hours free parking at Sainsbury's Pioneer Square - just follow the signs for Pioneer Square as you drive into Bicester and park in the multi-storey car park above the supermarket. Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you. You don't need to shop in Sainsbury's to get the free parking! Where to Find UsBut then I remember the wonderful people I’ve had the privilege of knowing: the Childline and Silver Line staff and volunteers, and Sir Nicholas Winton, who saved a generation of Czech Jewish children. We have to remember the proverb ascribed to Edmund Burke: ‘For the triumph of evil, it is only necessary for good men to do nothing.’ And women, of course. You were asked to apply for the job of BBC One Controller, which would have made you the first female controller of any television channel. Is it true that you turned it down out of fear? Of course, the treatments have improved, and technology has changed hugely. I’ve discovered a new condition that hits you during the months before your next scan, and until the results. It’s called ‘Scanxiety’. In Older & Bolder, you say ‘the killer question’ is, what do you do for fun? Because many older people sadly can no longer remember. What’s your own answer to that question? In the first collaboration between media outlets from different faiths, Jewish News worked with British Muslim TV and Church Times to produce a list of young activists leading the way on interfaith understanding. Miriam, who has ME and lives at home with Rantzen, is clearly extremely proud of her mum. ‘It’s very moving when people helped by Childline or the Silver Line share what her work means to them,’ she says. ‘But my overriding gratitude is for everything that Mum has taught me about cultivating joy, and being creative and undaunted in the face of challenges.’ The bad news is that so many older people have nobody in their lives to have an enjoyable conversation with. The good news is that telephone chats can fill that gap, to an extent, especially if they’re regular.

I’m not good at regrets. What I treasure most are the fantastic friendships I have made thanks to That’s Life! during the last 50 years, the people I met, and the team who worked so hard, and laughed so hard, together for so long.” Dame Esther Rantzen has revealed that her oncologist has told her she’ll die “sometime in the next 10 years”. The 83-year-old journalist and Childline founder announced that she’d been diagnosed with stage four lung cancer in May.

Multi-award-winning broadcaster, founder of Childline and The Silver Line, campaigner, mother, grandmother and joyous trailblazer of our times, Dame Esther Rantzen dazzles in the glory of getting older and ever bolder. She added: “It does concentrate on your mind to be told that you have stage four lung cancer. You do think, wait a minute, I’ve got less time than maybe I had assumed so you prioritise. As much as I love it and as much as I respect people who wanted to die working, for me I didn’t want to die working.” Chatting to Alex Jones on BBC’s The One Show, Esther updated viewers on her condition. When Alex asked where she was currently at, Esther said: “I did say to my oncologist, when am I going to die, and he said: ‘Sometime in the next 10 years.’ But how soon, how late, I do not know.” In 1976, Rantzen devised the documentary series The Big Time, which launched Sheena Easton's singing career.
