About this deal

Long story short... creating a particular finish on marble (or any stone) or polishing marble to make and entire countertop or floor "shiny" is not a DIY job. Marble’s opulent sparkle is still there, hidden beneath a scuffed and murky surface but waiting to shine again. Or if the damage and etching is over a large area of flooring or an entire countertop it may be best to consult a stone restoration professional.

Cleaning marble requires different products and methods than other surfaces. Additionally, it is susceptible to staining, scratching, and other damage if you use the wrong cleanser or even the wrong cloth or sponge. Generally speaking, you don’t want to use too much elbow grease, which could result in scratching, which on marble is usually referred to as “etching.” Do’s and Don’ts This cleaning spray is safe to use on any surface that can get wet and will eradicate stains, watermarks and grime from granite, marble and any other natural stone surface without causing any damage or leaving any residue at all. To use, simply rotate the nozzle to the ‘spray’ or ‘stream’ setting and spray the cleaner from 6-8 inches away from the surface. In addition to cleaning regularly (or whenever your marble gets spilled on), polishing every couple weeks or at least monthly will do wonders for the long term durability and quality of your marble countertops. While polishing is more involved than cleaning, it’s not complicated, difficult, or particularly time consuming – short of letting the polishing solution sit. But again, choice of tools and cleaning agents is vital. Obviously, abrasive items like steel wool are a big no-no. Now there are marble polishing kits and a wide variety of marble polishing agents, but it’s important to know if they’re for a specific color of marble or if they’re general use.

If you aren’t sure where to begin when polishing your marble countertops or you have a large amount of marble flooring that needs polishing, don’t be afraid to call an expert for help. It may cost more than doing it yourself, but if you want to ensure that your marble stays in good condition, a professional can be a good investment.

A palm sander can be rented at Home Depot and elsewhere, but the charge for a single weekend is about half the cost of buying the unit. DIY enthusiasts will find many other uses for the sander, so owning rather than renting is our recommendation. This corrosive chemical reaction will essentially eliminate the shiny surface layer achieved from the marble polishing process described above revealing the dull marble underneath. DIY tip: Wet polishing (our second method below) using water and polishing powder, is an option too, but it takes practiced technique to be successful plus makes additional mess that must be cleaned up to avoid staining the marble. The first-time marble polishing DIY homeowner will achieve better results with the dry polishing method, but it is labor intensive for large areas. CLEAR THE ROOM DIY tip: Keep the lid on your polishing powder when not sprinkling it on the floor. This will keep moisture from getting into it and causing clumping. Even some professional polishing tools and substances might be too aggressive for marble. These are,e.g. cement and magnesium aggregates. Milos Marbles makes sure never to use any substancesthat could cause any sort of damage. We favour natural and non-toxic substances, as well as natural abrasives. This cleaner can easily take over from your other daily cleaning products and can be used regularly without causing any damage to natural stone surfaces. Rob joined the Home Flooring Pros team in 2014 and is a freelance writer, specializing in flooring, remodeling and HVAC systems ( read more). The product is plant-based and safe for use on food preparation surfaces, as well as around children and pets. It is also Leaping Bunny Certified, as well as vegan and GMO-free. At some point, there’s probably going to be a spill that you don’t get to in time, and the marble will begin to stain. Once you’ve cleaned the spill, go to work on the stain as soon as you can. Stains from organic materials like coffee, wine, food, or pet urine are best treated with a solution of 12% hydrogen peroxide with a few drops of ammonia. An oil-based stain like milk, cosmetics, or cooking oil should be lifted with acetone or mineral spirits and then rinsed away.

If this sounds like more work than you want or a level of expertise is required beyond your current ability, you’re not alone. Most homeowners, even those with good skills, choose professional marble polishing. It’s the best way to get the results you want. It is also possible to adjust the polishing and honing services:the level of desired gloss / shine depends on the client’s wishes. We might ensure a higher level of shiny glamour to e.g. hotels and museums than in the case of amarble kitchen in a private home. Just consult usto discuss your expectations! Milos Marbles always respects the stone that is entrusted to us. We know it, we study it, and we want to help to bring out its natural beauty because that’s what must be remembered about its shine – it comes from the stone itself. Marble floor polishing

Another technique for marble floor polishing involves the use of special waxes that are “spread” on the floor to be restored. However, the results obtained with this technique are qualitatively lower than marble floor polishing service with diamonds. Wax is characterized by a recurring problem or the formation of a sort of film that is easily damaged with some types of shoes, does not last long and is not able to cover existing scratches or imperfections on the stone surface. The technologies available have made activities such as diamond marble floor polishing much less expensive and consequently accessible to those who own a marble floor, without having to resort to other palliative solutions such as wax polishing. How to polish marble by hand

When it comes to marble in the bathroom, your job is to prevent soap scum. Use a squeegee to scrape water and soap off the walls of the shower every single time you use it. This will prevent soap from damaging the marble’s finish. You can use a steam cleaner here, too, to remove any stubborn grime, but be sure to dry or squeegee the area immediately afterward. Removing Stains from Marble I never really waxed the polished floor, bur sparingly used a water soluble floor polish, a few times a year. But the re-polishing, required me to clean with a good dish washing detergent before the yearly polishing. Eventually we just got in the habit of removing our shoes, and hit the traffic areas with the 10,000 grit, for couple of hours twice a year, with no wax. After you’ve cleaned off your baking soda/water solution, crush up chalk (yes, chalk) into a fine powder. Then use a damp cloth and dip it into your powdered chalk mix. Apply in a similar fashion to the baking soda/water solution and then using a microfiber or other fine cloth, thoroughly rinse off the powdered chalk residue. No need to let it sit. Just buff on and wipe off. A: You can use your floor as soon as the sealant has dried. This is usually couple of hours after the application of last coat of sealant. Sanding action: Press the sanding pad against the floor, and move it side to side in a sweeping motion. The gentle arc should be 24” to 48” depending on what is comfortable for you. The further away from you the sander is, the less control you have.
