Yet, it’s best if we retire to something not from something. As teachers, we are people with a calling to help others. This doesn’t end when the job ends, although taking care of ourselves can now come first. Be sure to keep in touch with other retired teachers, for emotional and intellectual support and for practical concerns. Once retired, we are no longer in a union. In my area, we formed an association to protect our health insurance. Teaching techniques have changed considerably since I was at school. The level of engagement, energy and enthusiasm that teachers have to have now is much higher. But I don’t see why I shouldn’t be able to sustain that for at least five years, if not 10. I’ll take it year by year.
