About this deal

I recently enjoyed Bart Ehrman’s provocative and amusing Heaven and Hell: A History of the Afterlife. Ehrman reminds us that the Bible says almost nothing about these mysterious places, and that popular conceptions owe much to the fertile imagination of ancient fantasy writers. These literary inventions have infiltrated the collective consciousness, and reshaped the beliefs and politics of billions of humans to this day. Ruby May is a sympathetic character. She’s motivated and determined and her care of children is beyond reproach. Trained at the prestigious Norland school and recipient of her childcare certificate, Nurse May puts the child or children she is caring for at the center of her life. Norland College, which still exists today, provided Prince George and his siblings, Charlotte, and Louis, the children of Prince William and Kate with a Norland nanny. Ms. Halls does not disappoint and will have you staying up late so you can find out what's going on in this household and with each character. 5/5

Mrs England by Stacey Halls: Brimming with mystery, suspense Mrs England by Stacey Halls: Brimming with mystery, suspense

An eerie, dangerous landscape, a wealthy family, a children’s nurse, a controlling husband, and characters with secrets greet us in this delicious, Gothic novel. When the kindly family she works for relocate to America, Ruby May – a newly graduated nurse from the prestigious Norland Institute in London – takes a position looking after the children of Charles and Lilian England, a wealthy couple from a powerful dynasty of mill owners. At first daunted by the prospect of having four children under her care, where previously she only had one, Ruby soon settles into life at the isolated Hardcastle House in West Yorkshire. But there’s something not quite right about the family entrusted to her care – a feeling that’s reinforced by the beautiful yet mysterious and aloof Mrs England who wanders around in a daze and has a detached relationship with her children.Thank you to the publisher, MIRA, and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of Mrs. England in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. Like her previous novels, you can tell an immense amount of research has gone into this story. I loved the slow-building feeling of menace in the story, it’s so atmospheric and there were some moments that definitely gave me a feeling of dread. One of the most compelling things for me was the complex characters – so many of them are way more than they seem on the surface. Mr and Mrs England were brilliant characters and Halls has a brilliant way of making you question who they truly are. Ruby is a really interesting protagonist and I loved learning about her family and her past alongside her time with the Englands.

atmosfera. My main criticism was that after all that build, I was let down by the ending. Suddenly everything happened all too fast and it was all over, and I was left feeling somewhat dissatisfied, and with the feeling that the main plot had all been rather too predictable. Have you ever been so disappointed by a book that you didn’t even want to write the review, because you really did not want to think of it any longer? Mrs England is the third book from historical fiction writer Stacey Halls. I read and love both The Familiars and The Foundling, so this was an incredibly anticipated release for me. The story follows Nurse Ruby May a graduate of the Norland Institute. When she is forced to leave her position she knows she needs to find another as soon as possible. When the opportunity comes up to be a nurse to the four England children, Ruby takes the position immediately. When she arrives in Yorkshire she soon finds things aren’t right with the family. Mrs England is detached and mysterious, and the servants won’t talk to her. As Ruby spends more time with the family, she uncovers more than she could possibly imagine.

Norland stipulates that if their graduates lose three positions, they will no longer be considered Norland nurses. This puts pressure on Nurse May to succeed at her next position which is with the Englands in Yorkshire. Mr. England is a mill owner and there are four children in the family, Rebecca, Saul, Millie, and one year old Charley. I love how Halls brings the children and the nursery to life. All the chores Nurse May has to accomplish, washing and dressing the children, cleaning the nursery, noting how all their clothing fits them badly and how all but Charley needs new shoes, and being entertainer in chief. She’s always mending, playing, supervising walks, teaching, and available. As the eldest of five, Nurse May’s experience with her own siblings puts her at an advantage. It isn’t long before she notices that Mrs. England doesn’t visit the children often, and when she takes the children to the drawing room for daily visits, Mrs. England always seems uneasy with them. . . Do I just happen to be one of the few, who feel unimpressed by Mrs. England? Or did I miss something? When I’m most in need of joy, I turn to crime fiction, and everyone who loves crime fiction as much as I do will understand why. I suppose it has something to do with the fact that justice is almost always reliably meted out, and that’s a great comfort. I’m a serial monogamist where crime writers are concerned, and I’m currently passionately attached to Lisa Jewell, whose novels somehow manage to be good-natured, creepy and tense all at once. When her latest, Invisible Girl, finally lands on the doormat, I’ll lie about all day reading and forget all my woes. I did question halfway into the book about a certain person, so it didn’t come as no surprise when I was proved right, however……why. That was my eagerness to find out. Overall, I have to say the reason why I’m giving Mrs. England three stars is because of the author’s writing skill. If the quality of the writing had been a little worse, I would have stopped reading this story a long time ago. Intimacies by Katie Kitamura (to be published in the UK in July) is beautifully written, deep and soulful, and imbued with a calm, wise energy. You can read it as a psychological thriller or a philosophical meditation but for me, primarily, it is the quest of a woman, a stranger in a strange city, as she comes to The Hague to escape New York, and struggles with power, inequality, justice, memory and love – or the absence of it. In the quietest way, it is a deeply transformative story.

Mrs. England: A Novel - Kindle edition by Halls, Stacey

In 1904, Ruby May is looking for a fresh start and accepts a position in Yorkshire as a children’s nurse for the Englands, a wealthy couple who live in the isolated Hardcastle House. Although she builds a connection with the three children, something doesn’t seem quite right with the servants or between Mr. and Mrs. England. My Thoughts: I've read both of Stacey Hall's previous novels: The Familiars and The Foundling, so knew I would enjoy this one, and I did. Still though, of the three, The Familiars is my favorite. It's the elements of witchcraft in The Familiars, that and the atmospheric setting, that make it so. Halls is very good at drawing characters, with Ruby aware of herself and others around her, although first impressions are sometimes misguided. Mrs England’s birth family are named Greatrex and are all unappealing, and rather homogenous. Perhaps this is an intentional contrast with an otherwise diverse cast, each of whom play an individual role in an intriguing book. There are a number of tangents, red herrings and twists that are supposed to keep the anticipation steady. None of them really lead any where and feel more like false promises. Of course there is no such thing as the perfect family and Ruby is alerted from the beginning that all is not well:

Failed to impress are the words that comes to mind on finishing this one. A nice easy read but certainly not one I will remember a few months from now Gradually the truth about the many secrets lurking within the England household emerges, revealing a chilling picture of deception, manipulation and control. If you love the gothic elements of novels such as Rebecca or Jane Eyre, you are sure to enjoy Mrs England. acțiunea. Mrs England is a tale of mental health, power and marriage, but it’s also a story of the deepest and darkest deception – of the deceit between a husband and wife, between adults and children, between a person’s heart and their mind. It’s made all the more compelling by its isolated Yorkshire setting, which cuts its characters off from the outside world and which Halls writes about so beautifully. She has the ability to draw readers into her story so completely that it’s a real effort to wrench yourself out of it when you invariably have to put the book down. If you’ve loved Stacey Halls’ previous books, you’re in for a real treat with this novel – the author’s most evocative, intriguing and compelling book so far.
